it looks like most cars were running spare tires with spikes or something is there a reason that you don't use normal size tires with the spikes? do the narrow ones work better? and why?

Narrower tires are able to cut through the snow into the ice...look at any WRC car at Monte Carlo and they'll be sporting the same set-up. For ice and snow...narrower is better.
