Default My car won't pass smog!!!!

Before I explain the problem, I want to tell you guys that I know it's in the wrong section, but I came here because Club4Ag and Hachiroku.net is down and I use to have an Integra and you guys were very informative and helpful so I thought it might work again.

I have a 1985 Corolla Gt-s, I know it had a head job and I think the previous owner messed up the valve opening things (forgot the name) by making them too large or something. and my engine has 228k miles.

My test result was this:

I failed fuel cap functional, and ignition timing.

For the fuel cap, I just have to replace it right? and ignition timing, I just have to raise my distributer right?

15 mph HC - 278 CO - 1.07 NO - 2060
Avg - 41 Avg - 0.13 Avg - 399
Max - 157 Max - 0.93 Max - 1227

25 mph HC - 178 CO - 0.96 NO - 1622
Avg - 29 Avg - 0.11 Avg - 332
Max - 132 Max - 0.72 Max - 1057

I failed everything.

I have heard of two methods. One will be cutting a coke can in half and poking holes and shoving it in my exhaust.

Second will be pouring 2 quart of denatured alcohol into my gas tank when it is 1/8 full. Someone once said this produced a lvl 7 HC from a 220. Will denatured alcohol help me pass? The guy who told me that said they just went over it quickly and it was done. My guy drives the thing for 15mph and 25 mph for 5 minutes total.

Any help? My re-test is on the 24th

set your timing to stock stetting(use timing light)
looks like maybe a bad cat.
drive it around pretty good before they test it again
so the cat is nice and hot.

I read about the alchol thing. But it was a small amount.

It seems like you have much bigger isuues if you are smoking. If you have bad rings you might not be able to pass with all the tricks in the book untill you get the problem fixed.

"I failed everything"

yes, you have high #.....in my opinion those remidies or band-aid that you suggested will not help....it sounds like you have a combination of problems and they all need to be addressed.....before you go replacing your cat you need to address the problems so you wont pre-mature kill you cat....

alright, so u failed your smog check. This year Toyota Corolla comes in either fuel injection of Carburetor.

If your car is Fuel injected I would check the voltage at the o2 sensor, because your CO failed. not only that, when you have high CO your HC(hydrocarbons are going to be elevated). But in your case this year model doesn't come with a EGR system and your NOX is also high, I'm thinking that your CAT is shot.

If your car has a Carburetor fuel system, your gonna have to get the Carburetor adjusted, meaning they're gonna have to lean it out a little. Not only that, the CArburetors come with the EGR so this will take care of your NOX.

Regardless, your gonna need a Catalytic converter to lower the HC's. Including the other repairs(the repairs i stated above plus you mentioned that you failed ignition timing). If i was you I wouldn't mess with any of those additives, they don't work.

If you think this is going to give you nothing but headaches, you could always retire your vehicle to the state if this only a biennial test(no change of ownership). The state will give you a $1,000.00 to retire it. If your interested go to any Smog Check station and ask for a CAP(Consumer Assistant Program) application. Or call 1-800-952-5210(BAR)Bureau of Automotive Repair
