Default Getting ready to buy a GT35R, Shroud or no Shroud??

I've been reading alot on the ported shrouds/ anti-surge compressor housings for the 35r's and was wondering if they are used more often than the traditional housings..

lately i've seen two types, the 1st ones have the holes drilled around the inlet port and the other type looks like the housings on the 30r's..

just want to know if I should consider it.. I have heard some surging from the engine every now and then, but its kinda faint w/ my old turbo.. I think it can be attributed to the spring in my BOV being very stiff.. Thus, I took out the spring and shorten it a few coils to make it softer.. NOw I can press it down a little easier w/ my thumbs.. Before, it took alot of effort to even move the valve on the BOV..

BTW, the BOV is a Tial Knock off that I got from a friend.. The spring inside it was unusually LONG and a little firmer than expected. It seemed to be fully compressed when sanwiched inside the BOV.. Hopefully by modifying the spring and making it softer, my surging problems may go away and I could quite possibly just go w/ a regular compressor housing..

I just want to make sure I get the right compressor housing as this will be the LAST turbo I buy..

Should also mention that I"m running a 84.5mm fully built GSR. and previously using a t3t67..

Thanks..

I got the ported shroud as it's suposed to increase the efficiency range of the turbo a bit, and it sounds crazy . I havn't testid it yet though.

I thought Ported Shrouds were the bandwagon for '06. Divided turbine housing is the bandwagon for '07.

They caught on late '06.... divided housings has potential.

Bandwagon Time Line

'01 - Anti-FMU
'02 - EQ Manifolds
'03 - SC61
'04 - Mase the tuner
'05 - Top Mount Manifolds
'06 - GT35ArRrrrrrr
'07 - K series / Divided Housings / Tial turbine v-band housings ?

I'm leaving company names out of there since someone will end up turning it into a flame fest, lol.

from what i understand, the "surge line" on a graph of the turbo moves slightly to the left, supposedly reducing surge. haha if im totally wrong, sorry. anyhow, i didnt notice any surge from my 60-1. now w/ the 35r with the ported shrowd, i still havent noticed any surge. it does sound kinda cool. i heard that it should make the turbo spool slower, but that sure as hell didnt happen on mine. how about anyone else?

You mean the "speed holes" drilled into the inlet?

There's allot more to it then just drilling the housing. Just because it looks like that from the outside does not mean you can just drill holes in your housing. rofl You cannot modify your existing housing if that what you guys are trying to get at.

The ported shroud lowers the top end efficiency so you would not be able to push the limits of the turbo as far. Whoever told you it increased it lied to you.

either way the 35r has been maxed out at 650whp on ported shroud and normal covers so if its the same price no reason to not get a port shroud cover, to just help keep it out of surge and it makes the the turbo louder which I'm sure some like.

I have seen first hand a .82 GT35R make more then 650 on a 84.5mm gsr. This was the non-ported shroud. Not saying its a big difference but it DOES make some difference. I'm told the ported guys spool a bit slower as well but that's here say.
