Default I have possibly the dumbest question...

from an intelligent person to ever be posted on this forum. What is OBD-1 (ducks out of way of flying objects) Apparently I have an OBD-1 GSR ('94), but I have no idea wtf it means. Thanks.

On Board Diagnostics system, version 1. It deals largely w/ emissions and stuff like that. Your O2 sensor in your exhaust is part of that. Also the injectors and distributor are OBD-1 specific. OBD-2 cars have 2 O2 sensors, and are alot more picky when it comes to bolt-on mods that change airflow characteristics of the car.

OBD-I (On-Board Diagnostics) is just a safe-check for all the important emissions regulators on the car. If something goes wrong that affects the emissions of the vehicle, then OBD-I will know about it using the available sensors on the vehicle.

OBD1 Cars are a tiny bit less restrictive, and have less sensors, or some such.

From what I understand, the OBD1 cars have more power... in the range of 5-12hp.

Bastards.

appreciate the info. So, an OBD-1 car ('94-'97, right?), is marginally faster than an OBD-2 car ('98+)?

marginally more powerful.

I've never seen any evidence of them being any faster at all.

My car ran a 15.3 bone stock... and a 15.1 w/ AEM intake (see sig) which I feel is pretty quick for a stock GSR (or very very lightly modded GSR) I don't see two many OBD1 cars doing this.

My friend Christian is even a bit faster than me, he has a '99 GSR.

96+ cars are OBD-2.

Anyone know how Mass Air flow and Speed Density systems calculate into this? I've heard of both yet they may be completely the same.

Thanks,
Noel

I beleave the difference in ODB1 vs ODB2 is often blown out of porportion. There is a difference, but probably 2-3hp at most.

I'm not sure about speed density, but mass air flow is one way that some cars measure how much air is entering the engine, and therefore is able to adjust fuel accordingly. Hondas rely on manifold air pressure (vacuum) to determine how much air is coming in. That is why your ECU will throw a code if you just throw a turbo onto a Honda. It doesn't like to see positive pressure (boost) coming in there. I'm pretty sure most factory turbo cars use a mass air flow setup, I know DSM's do.
