Default 1994 type s, engine blown

Hello All,

Wanted to introduce myself and tell everyone hi and see if I could get some help with my problem. I bought a 1994 prelude with "supposedly" a newer engine put in and after 2 weeks the fourth cylinder seized on me. The car will start but runs like crap. Could someone please let me know what it would take to get this engine running reliable again. I use this vehicle for work, so I don't want to swap to anything else, I just want to make this engine run the best it can and be HONDA reliable. I've used the search function on this board to see if this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything. I've listed the details again below.

1994 Honda Prelude type s (non vtec)
blown engine
207000 on the odometer
5 speed manual trans

Thank You

It's not a Type S, it's just an S. That aside, you need to either rebuild that motor or swap in a new one. The F22A you have is very common, and you can find a used one with fairly low miles for around $200

Yeah, it's not a 'Type S'.

If you have the time you could take the engine out and take it apart to find specifically what's wrong. Otherwise just get another F22 like InvaderTrax said.

Sorry for the "type" mistake, now I know. Would you happen to know any places online that might have a decent mileage f22a? does it matter if it came out of an accord? what if it's a f22a4 or f22a6, can that work in my prelude (f22a1)? Sorry for the ignorance but I'm new to the import scene.

Thanks

If you don't have any local junkyards, http://www.hmotorsonline.com is a pretty good site to get an engine.

I'm in Romulus, Michigan. So I can buy any "H" or "F" series and it will drop right in? Which engine will give me the most reliability?

Thanks for all the help guys!!

If you don't care about performance, just get another F22. The A1 and A4 are exactly the same, and the A6 has a better intake manifold and slightly more agressive cam. The H23 would be a mild step up in performance and probably cost around $500 plus a new ECU. From the sound of things, an H22 is more than you want to spend

I've budgeted $1000.00 for the engine and $500.00 for the install. My main concern is reliability. I put 1000 miles a week on my work vehicle so I would like to get 100,000 miles out of whatever engine I put in.

Thanks

Sounds like you just need another F22A to me. It'll be very reliable so long as it's in good shape and is installed correctly.....if you're mechanically inclined you could buy a Helms manual and do it yourself to save a lot of $$$.

I probably could do the work myself, but I don't have the time nor the space to do it. I would rather have a professional install it so that I can have a warranty on the work. I'm looking for a f22a as I type this, so if anyone knows of someone that has a good condition engine, please let me know.

Thank You,

The F22A1/4/6 came from both the 92-96 Prelude S and any model 90-93 Accord

sorry guys, since i have a new account I can't post over 5 times within 24hrs. Anyway, I
ordered a f22b DOHC for 799.99 (This engine was used in the 1992-1996 Honda Prelude Si in Japan. It is similar to the H23A) shipped to my mechanic. The company I bought it from assured me that it was a direct drop in fit for my 1994 prelude. He also stated that I could use all of my existing parts (5spd,ecu,wiring harness). If this information is incorrect please let me know so that I can cancel the order.

I have a question for everyone. When ordering parts for this engine, can I order parts that specify H23A?? I've read that these engines are almost identical and would like to order a set of headers and exhaust system for the lude. Please check the links below and let me know what you think of the upgrades I plan. Please remember, I put 1000 (minimum) on my vehicle a week, so I'm not planning on putting top of the line products on this vehicle yet.

You should be good to go with the F22b just add a new timing belt waterpump, I would go ahead and do balancer seal and cam seals also just for that extra bit of security and just change the oil regularly and enjoy your new engine

I believe the information the seller told you is accurate. Maybe someone else will chime in and confirm that.

I've ordered a Full Gasket Set from ebay, I hope that has everything in it that you referred too. The link to the kit I purchased is below.

I will go ahead and order the timing belt and waterpump. Thanks for the knowledge!!

yes you can use the h23 header, but not the f22a

if you want everything to bolt up i would replace everything with h23 parts or you will have to add/subtract pipe

just get new header, flex pipe, cat, catback.......or you can have one custom made and just add 22" resonator and chambered muffler of your choice if you want to keep it quiet

Thanks for the info, can I assume that I can order anything for this engine that says h23a? The timing belt, water-pump , seals, etc etc?

Thanks

Yep, it's all the same parts with the exception of the rotating assembly (crank, rods, pistons, etc) which is why it's a 2.2 instead of a 2.3. Pistons might be the same though...IDK.

The head is exactly the same as an H23.

Looks like they'll work, but OBX has a bad rep for their stuff breaking, cracking, not fitting, etc... A good & relatively cheap header is Megan.

Update 1/23/07 3:37pm est- I can't post more than 5 times in 24hrs so I can only update my existing post.

I'm stuck with the OBX items I purchased because both people said they would give me bad feedback if I cancelled or refused to pay.

Thanks
