Default how high are you revving on your oem retainers?

ok im stuck, i dont know if i should go with aftermarket ti retainers or not. heres my stance:

1) i dont feel like taking my motor apart every 10k miles to replace them. i drive over that each year and im trying to make a build that i can leave alone for a few years. are there any snap fit (or press fit whatever) ti retainers that have been proven to last like 20-30k miles?

2) im using itr springs and gsr cams, and would like to take my car to 8500 i think. i have heard some bad stories about oe retainers having some probs above then, but im still not sure. ive also seen/heard about the keepers pulling through the retainers, which i am scared of.

cliffs notes:
can i safely run a 400+ hp motor to 8500 rpms on oem b16 retainers for like 20-30k miles? if not, what ti retainers offer the longest lifespan? i have a set of portflows now but they have about 9-10k miles on them and im very hesitant to use again.

the stock rev limit is 8200, 300more rpms im sure isnt goint to hurt it. i know of alot of people who rev there stock B series vtec motors to 8500 (including me) without a problem. i think keepers pulling through is a result of too high of a lift on the cams for the stock valvetrain.

thats just about exactly what i was looking for.

again my valvetrain will consist of gsr cams/skunk gears. oem itr dual springs and b16 retainers/keepers/valves. the b16 parts have about 50k miles, not sure on the itr springs but they are in good visual condition..

if you dont want to hassle or worry, just pick up some skunk2 retainers. i had a friend that was revving to 8700 on stock in his b16 and he floated some valves. i went with a full skunk2 valvetrain. if you want to worry even less, get the ferrea

Stock B16A Sir-II 8200stock

I rev to 8400 daily, and im confident it can hold more on the b16 valvetrain. ITR springs/retainers would last the lifetime of the motor and could handle 8800rpm im guessing.

have many other people put that many miles on portflows??? ive got a set with about 9-10k on them now. visually they look real good. maybe ill get in touch with portflow and see what kind of thickness they should be at and ill compare mine to see how worn down they are

I ran NA for a few years w/crower stg 2 cams and crower springs, stock OEM retainers (retainers had over 100k miles on them) slapped a turbo setup made well over 400hp on that setup with 9500 rpm shifts, NO PROBLEMS< then finally this year i swapped over to titainium retainers, so it can be done

but again if u have lots of money in your motor i wouldnt take the chance, its your call

I'm that cousin.

So far so good. 8k on the street 9k on the dyno/track.

Fingers crossed...however I think this winter I am going to replace the retainters..for piece of mind...

Honda retainers were not made to rev that high. So if you want to take a risk then go ahead but for $140 you can buy retainers and not have to worry about droping a valve.

if u really tryin to stay away from problems down the road, then why would u question using aftermarket retainers...just my opinion

original post said 8,500

OEM ITR revs to 8,400 / 8,600 fuel cut

so..........

i feel: rev to stock or barely over "stock" OEM is fine

u want 9,500-10k+ then that's asking a bit much of OEM
