Default This or the Fit?

I love the honda fit a ton, but this is really a tough decision.. what do you think? Its called the Smart Fortwo.
[IMG][/IMG]
It starts at around $13,000 and will be coming to the US in 2008. It has a top speed of 95mph, so it can survive on the American highways.

believe it or not I remember reading in C&D a while ago that the SMART cars have the same or similar crash test ratings as E class mercedes. also, the "shell" of the smart cars are designed with a "nut" mentality, the shells are ultra strong to help withstand accidents. I would totally rock one! and at 50 mpg easily I might need to fill up once a month and be good to go.

yeah and I remember a mythbusters where they crashed the smart into a wall at 75 mph and the shell came out perfect, the rest of the car was shot but the shell was fully intact

Damn, here in Canada its already out, but a full equipped smart is around 32 000 CDN. 13 000 is pretty cheap I guess. But I'll take the fit over that

No doubt the Smart car will sell. I just don't see it being all that practical for most people. You can haul a lot of crap in a Fit for the size. I could see the Smart car being good in overpopulated cities with no parking, etc.

exactly, you can pack a lot of stuff in the Fit, but only a handbag or so in the smart, which is a big purchase factor in my opinion

yea thats a pretty good point, the fit does seem to be more practical, and this is called a city car. Still so tough, it does get good mpg on the other hand.

there were reports of people getting their Smart flipped when they are parked in canada. I'm pretty sure it'll happen in US since we get way more dumb kids in here.

From http://www.smartcarofamerica.c...ng,en/,
"Weight without driver coupe 1,653 lbs and the cabriolet 1741 lbs."

about 300lbs lighter then the elise. And I have never heard of anyone flipping over the car... that makes me so sad!

Thats a neat car, but has basically zero cargo carrying ability, which IMHO is one of the Fit's biggest attractions. I dont see it competeing with a Fit.

thanks for the pictures, those are so sweet, ive never seen the engine in that car. 125 is pretty impressive for that small of a motor.

I wouldn't drive a Smart simply because it is simply not powerful enough for any dailydriving use. Its rediculously slow, its even dangerously slow and I'm serious there. Do not try to get onto Highway with that type of char because at 60mp/h the car is so shaky with even no wind outside. And I'd be very very very surprised if the smart would come out with a MSRP of $13,000 because as someone said, here in canada, the base retail price is about $30,000 with no options at all..

A friend of mine has one. Once you factor in the maintenance costs (ie: oil needs to be pumped out of the engine), the Fit is cheaper to run per mile, and you have more interior room.

when this first came out in europe, the supposed US price would have been around 8000. also they have a turbo diesel version that gets around 60 mpg.

brabus makes performace upgrades..

the price in the US is gonna be comparable to FITS, Scions. the MPG is not gonna be much better due to US regs on emissions. if this continues to be true, i dont see how this thing is gonna do well here. they are very small and easy to park and get around in. combine that with the high MPG of the original diesel version not available in the US even in 2008 and you have a winner. i would buy one as a second car.. but not if its not much better than a fit and has about 1/3 the space.

Also remember F=M x A. Since there is a (relatively) little amount of mass in the car the force is can exert is smaller compared to a larger vehicle.
