Default What is needed to be able to re-flash a 1990 DX via LAPTOP?

As the topic says...I'm willing to swap to MPFI if I have to...and if so, what is needed to accomplish that properly?

You have to. First off, I just want to know why you want to reflash the ecu? But as to the technical part...mpfi swap first. Second is to get an mpfi ecu from 1990 and up. If you jump up to 1992+ you need an obd1 swap on top of it, so for ease of understanding, we'll assume you will be using a 1990 obd0 pm6 ecu. First you need to unsolder and remove the stock chip without ripping any of the foil pattern off the board. Then you need to solder a 28 pin eprom zif socket (the piece that holds the eeprom for easy installation and removal) into the board. You also need an eprom burner, I believe the moates ostrich would be the one to use if you want to flash the eeprom while your car is running. Otherwise you must remove the chip, burn in a standard eprom burner (moates burn1, willem burner, etc.), and then re-insert into the zif socket. Datalogging is a totally different story, and requires certain cables and pins to be added to the ecu. But since you never mentioned datalogging, we'll skip that part and keep it like in "the movie", because at this point it's kinda pointless to want to chip an ecu if you have a dpfi d15 with no mods done to it to merit chipping in the first place.
Want to start learning what's really involved? Research and work...check out http://www.pgmfi.org and read everything you can...it'll set you in the right direction.

Hmmmm, datalogging would be an added advantage. Main goal wasn't to make crazy hp with this arrangement, but to perform my own R&D on the ability to increase the fuel economy. For my uses, I COULD go through all the hassel of what you just mentioned, or I could simply purchase an AEM EMS and WEGO to do what I need and have it "all in one" and I'm done essentially, right? I know they are not cheap, but I can get most any parts that I need from one of my customers (I do sales/tech for Ferrea Racing Components) at their cost, plus they own me a huge discount since I refer so many customers their way.

Even though I'd still have to swap over to MPFI, would the AEM be my "One-Stop-Shopping" solution?

you dont have to go with AEM, shop around and decide on what YOU need and what YOU want. You can purchase chipped ECUs for alot cheaper than AEM. If you want to play with your ECU, you will need to go MPFI.

I will be making physical alterations to the intake runners and combustion chambers, so full control of the fuel and timing, and the ability to monitor the A/F precisely in addition to the fuel quantity and ignition timing.

What are my other choices besides AEM at this point?

Definitely serious...however I am the type of individual with too many projects going on at the same time, so having to build cables, setup a Romulator, loading and saving bins, etc is something I do not have time for. I'm sure that sounds lame for the people that have done it and understand it fluently, and perhaps it is simpler that it appears to me, but I need to scale down the setup time to do my experiments.

If someone has an entire PGMFI setup that they can sell to me modified for all of this, I would like to go that route. I am willing to pay someone for the setup time involved to make it worth their time. A full car-puter (another project) will be installed in this vehicle, so a permanent setup will be installed.

Any takers?

Wow....you weren't kidding. Ultra impressed with Chris and the knowledge that he has with the products available. I phoned the contact number and didn't leave a message since it was late figuring that I'll just again during regular hours. He ended up calling me back simply from the caller ID number that he saw!! He's even offered to source the entire PGMFI swap for this project as well to help out. Just to save him some time and effort, would anyone reading this happen to have a PGMFI swap available to sell?
