EGT gauge, is it a good idea to use one to detect detonation
Would an increase in exhaust temperature indicate detonation, and would an EGT be a good way to detect potential detonation?
it could help assist if you knew your car and knew what to look for. a/f gauge would be better to start with...
I find that the EGT is good for once you get your call all tuned out. They are more expensive than regular gauges cuz you need the gauge and pyrometer kit.
You can tell when to let off boosting. As you know you can't go boosting at crazy psi for like 3 minutes straight. The EGT lets you know when the temps are getting up there and you should let off.
The best would be to have an EGT and A/F.

EGT will help you avoid a detonation situation. Such as your motor is running lean, egts go up like someone already said. If you have a tank of bad gas, egts will go up. An egt gauge will *help* you determine where your ignition timing should be.
If detonation is occuring, its more likely that the dammage has been done before you see the increase in temp. A Greddy electronic warning gauge would help you avoid such a secnario.
