alright, so the car is a 99 hatchback. the plan is to swap a 99+ gsr engine or a 99+ b16 (from a civic si) then get the motor bared (sp) in california. my understand was that as long as the engine was the same year or newer than you car and you swapped over all the emissions stuff, you will pass. but i was recently told that the engine had to be offered in the car. (i.e. a coupe can put a b16 in it because it came in the si, but a hatch cant because it never came in the hatch)...i had never heard this up until now. can anyone confirm this for me?
(please dont tell me to search...because i did and couldnt find anything that dealt with this specifically)
thanks.

Whoever told you that was pulling your leg. The only motor that matters weither its a coupe, hatch or truck is the B20 (CRV) motor because its a light truck. Other then that it doesnt matter what the motor came out of. Most important is the year.

also while we are on the topic, can anyone give me a link to a list of all the necessary parts to bar (lets say) a gsr engine in a 99 hatch. all i know at this point is:
1. engine from the gsr(duh)
2. ecu from the gsr
3. ?
do i need the exhaust from the header back to the muffler? do i even need any of the exhaust parts?

Actually the year of the motor is top of the list then emission equipment. You could have all the emissions equipment you need to pass but if that motor isnt same year or newer your SOL.
Youll need a CAT, ecu, and all your smog stuff from your pervious motor. Also youll need to wire up the IABs if your going with GSR.

So the cat, ecu, and smog stuff from my original motor will work for the GSR? What about the fact that the d16y7 cat is mounted on the header. would i then need a cat from the gsr?

you need all the smog equipment from a 99 gsr on top of the usdm ecu and a motor at least the same year as your car.
cat should got after the header, like on the gsr. make sure you don't throw any codes. i just BAR'd an h22 in my hatch a few months ago.

If they want to open your ecu and look for a chip you fail.

No mix matched motors will pass. B18c block with B16 head, wont pass (unless its the ITR block), CRVTEC, LSVTEC, the K series frankenstein.
