Power steering problems
I have recently been experiencing some weird issues with my power steering. It has been really cold here lately and when I first start my car and for about the first 3 or 4 minutes of driving it seems as though I have no power steering. Then after a few minutes the steering becomes less and less stiff and then it's back to normal. It seems to me that it's like the fluid is cold and thick and then the fluid warms up and it flows better. Please help!!
yes you have explained the situation very well; as far as 'help' the engine should warm up the fluid after a short while of idle.
I do know a Canuck dude that moved to Alaska; he had a similar problem with his camry.
He hung a small trans cooler between the radiator and exhaust manifold to warm the fluid faster, but removed it in the summer.
I'd guess you could route tubing from the reservoir thru a trans cooler and then to the intake side of the P/S pump. It's all on the low pressure side of the system

Depending on what year, you may have a PS cooler out front of the radiator. Maybe in winter you could loop the tubing to eliminate this cooler? Maybe that would be enough to make it better?
