HELP!!! 93 Si H22A Timing Issue? Won't Run Right
Heres the situation. The swap was done a year ago. Car ran fine other then the common idle surging that h22as are known for (1-2k) The original distributor went and was replaced recently. After that everything went downhill. The car wouldn't start half the time. So we took another p13 ECU and another td-60u distributor and tried those.
The car will start and idle but will not throttle up. The thing is, you have to advance the timing completely on the distributor to even get the car to start. When you give it throttle it bogs out and intermittently backfires like the timing is out. Compression and Leakdown tested the motor and had 220 across the board... Valve clearance is perfect (in 6, ex 8). Static timing is 100% and if you set the ignition timing to 15 degrees before TDC the car will stall as soon as you give it gas. the IACV was replaced as well as a throttle cable, fuel filter, water pump, timing belt, starter, alternator, and spark plugs. Another wierd thing is that if you SLOWLY give it throttle it will almost rev all the way through the rev range, but if you give it more then a quarter throttle it was bog right out.
We tested the main relay, MAP, TPS, ICM. All tests are good but still throw Code 9 intermittently for Cylinder #1 position sensor.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?!?!?

How are you checking the cam timing?
I know you said it's 100%, but it still sounds like timing to me....

The distributor came from eBay (ofcourse) but I have a stock h22a distributor out of a working motor which is also where I got the other ECU
about the cam timing, were turning the motor over, setting the crankshaft to TDC (top dead timing mark in the hole infront of the block), making sure the cams white line is lined up. Everything we've done the car was done by a certified Honda tech.

And you can turn the engine over by hand and the timing stays good? What about the balance shafts, are they also aligned? If it's not those things, it probably is something is the distributor...

yea the timing stays perfect... were gonna try the balance shafts tomorrow. Ill keep you updated. Any other suggestions to try?

The white plus sign is TDC for setting the cam timing, and the red mark is 15 degrees for doing ignition timing (retard).

We checked the balance shaft and it was fine. Were gonna try to find a 3rd distributor or run an external coil.. ill keep ya updated.. anymore suggestions are welcome
the timing is perfect... cant speak for the distributor yet cause we havent found a third one. we took an old distributor and replaced the #1 cylinder position sensor in my new distributor with the old one and that did nothing. The cam timing has been checked probly 10 times and its perfect. we could try new injectors but if anything it seems like its running rich. looking at the plugs it doesnt seem like any of them are running lean... were gonna see if we can find another dist. today or tomorrow.
allmotorh22a and carnage.. when did you first start having the same problem?

well my cars had the problem since i bought it, it comes on and off though. we tried to check the timing- dizzy was set to all the way advanced *as far as the bolts would allow* so we set it back to "normal" and its driving fine but still kinda weird. We couldn't see the lines on the flywheel area, but im going to be pulling the head off to check the alignment of the cams, gears, belts, all those things.
