Default 92 Civic Hatch Speaker Question

i pulled out my door panel and was in the process of replacing my front speakers but they dont fit. my speaker is 6.5's and so are the old ones, but the speaker holder is still too small for my new speakers. anyone know if there is any different speaker holders for my car or do i have to drill the new speakers into the door.

well my front ones are aftermarket 6.5's but as i doulbe checked my oem plastic mounts, the opening is only 5'. this sucks, i've done a search about speaker sizes and crutchfield says 6.5's in the front. i think i'll have to custom some wood mounts, but before i do, could anyone who has 6.5's tell me how they did it. a pic of the mount would be great.

did anyone ever try cutting the plastic backing pieces of the oem mounts to fit some 6.5's?

this is what i got....

yeah, if you want to use those oem brackets, then you are going to need 5.25" speakers. yes crutchfield does say 6.5", but technically they are wrong. you can fit 6.5, but you are going to have to make something up so it can work.

Im 99% sure that the front speakers in my coupe and hatch are 6.5 inches. To get then mine to fit i had to cut the back of the speaker bracket (from the car) off. Give me some time to check/post a pic.

No, I have 6.5's in my front doors. Just get a dremel or a utility knife and "hack" up that stock peice until they fit. Just beware that some of the higher end models of speakers have a deeper magnet, and they may hit the window track. If this happens...just make a 1/4" baffle to bring the speakers out further from the regular mounting location.

It is certainly possible to put 6.5's there with minimal effort. Just look @ the locations closely, and I'm sure you can use common sense to get them to fit. Good luck man! Think positive! haha...because its definitely possible.

i have ALWAYS put 6.5 in in all my civics. 4 of them to be exact

cut the backing of the plastic away. and then you should be able to fit it.

some of the speakers come with adapters as well.

but iver never had a problem putting in 6.5

and when i buy new speakers for this hatch, 6.5 they will be

for me i took out the stockers, and managed to put 6.5's in secured by only 2 screws (that were angled sideways) and with a spacer. without the spacer the mag's would hit the door.

The reason it wont fit is because the back plate on the stock mount is too shallow. So i took a dremel to it and cut off the back plate. Now i can fit any 6.5's i want.

6.5" is the outer diameter.....

the inner opening is 5".. and most 6.5" speakers have 5" inner diameters...

the ones that don't are the Oversized 6.5"

to get around that, build a new bracket... or find one... my polk 6.5" speakers came with OS 6.5" speaker brackets...

now if the speaker is sticking out.. you might just have to cut the back of the plastic out...

Flip that black stock piece over...

Stomp on it, (SERIOUSLY, it will break the back plastic without hurting the mounting bracket).

Then, mount your 6.5 in there... works everytime. That is what I have always done. Of course, you can always dremel it as others suggested.

Same outcome!

i think im going to take a dremel and cut the back pieces. the only problem is that my kenwood 6.5's has a small lip behind the speaker so it doesnt fit through the 5' hole of the oem piece... you guys know if infinity 6.5's fit? i got a hookup on those and probably putting 6.5's w/ tweeters in the front and 5.25's in the back.

Yes Infinity perfect 6.5s work in there, I have put those in a friend's car before (93 civic ex). Do the dremel way if you would like, but honestly, my way works the same, without making a mess.

i just cut the mounts earlier today. new infinity 6.5's fit perfect. thanks for all the info.

now about the rears... anyone know how to make them 6.5's? i got the metal brackets that the speakers bolt onto. looks like its almost a good fit, except they're like 1cm too small. anyone ever do a custom for 6.5's or 6x9's. anyone ever shave the metal brackets... if you guys did let me know how.

put alpine type s mounting rings on there and the 6.5s will fit the rear brackets then. any shop or best buy that sells alpine should have tons of those alpine rings left over. philosophy, your right and wrong sort of. civics are easy, if it has the plastic mounts pictured above (usualy ex/si) in the door it fits a 6.5, if the speaker mounts directly to the door metal (usually cx/dx) it fits a 5.25. hope this helps.
