Fan only turns on when car is off
I have a 92 lude with 222k miles on the chassy and about 160k on the motor. The fan only turns on when i turn the accessories off and then stays on for a couple minutes before turning off. In the past i have just jumped the plug that controls it so it just stays on all the time, now that won't even work. When i jump it nothing happens. I can't get my fan to turn on at all except when my car is off. Anyone know whats going on?

Yeah, my temp does go up after about 20 min. You sure it "keeps going" after the car is off? You sure its on while the car is on? Cause mine isn't on at all until i turn the car off then it turns on.

have u checked the ECT switches? There are two of them. There is also a fan control unit under the carpet by the ECU on the passenger side. There is some electrical troubleshooting in the helms. Do you have one?
Yes mine keeps going, and I'm sure it also runs when the car is on, just that it stays on when I turn it off for about 5 minutes, but check the helms.
The cooling fan system on a prelude has two fans. They are designed to come on with ECT switches.
The main fan on the radiator is supposed to come on when the water temp reaches above 203 degrees and the second fan is supposed to come on when the water temp reaches above 223 degrees. If they don't work like that then somethings is wrong.

yeah i have a helms but its on the comp and a pain in the *** to find what im looking for but i'll take a look. And what does ECT stand for? Are you talking about the 2 sensors? The one next the the upper rad hose and the other....i forget where it is. And i'm also trying to figure out why when i jump the fan it no longer works...that would atleast be a temp solution...

Does anybody know why i am unable to jump my fan? One or both of my ect switches may be out but that doesn't explain why i can't jump the fan. It worked a couple months ago but now it doesn't. Any ideas?

You checked all the fan relays, correct?

where are the fan relays? And does the fan turning on after my car is off mean the relays are good? Cause its not like it just doens't work at all, it still turns on when i turn the car off.

My car was doing the same thing, turns out my radiator cap was busted, when I opened it the spring and the rubber pieces fell apart, I also put a capfull of coolent in there too, I dono if that helped.
