u get good coloring when your amperage is dialed in really good, and you move fast.

colors are just for looks, most guys will run a "fancy pass" on their weld to make it look like that.

if you wire brush your weld and u got no pitting or oxidation, its going to be just as strong as some colored weld..

Yeah that's what I was doing right now, welding it and making the second pass for coloring. Hopefully I can figure out a better way for time but for now that's the way i'm going to have to do it.

Contamination. Ideally if you're do stainless with 100% inert gas coverage the weld will just look like shiny stainless.

Here's what a stainless weld should look like (neither of these are mine).

And to add, if you wire brush afterwards, the weld is less likely not to rust in that haz area. I just learn this from talking to engloid, so my question is how come more people don't polish there stainless after its welded.

SMSP, contamination is correct.
if you really really really want coloring, a Gas lense helps and very good cleaning of the stainless helps as well, im saying like stainless wire wheel and even mild grinding but very mild though. stainless to mild steel using 308 or 316L filler will really give you some coloring. the coloring is cool but doesnt at all promise a good weld. Remember that its even a good Idea to clean your filler rod before using it, And about what shortyZ said about how you go over the welds for coloring, that can give you a much weaker heat affected zone equaling in a weak weld unless your doing a root pass and then filling the rest in. This can also warp flanges very well!
Good luck! and keep welding.

if the color has been brushed away from a weld, im usually suspicious because that bit of color and haz tells a story of what the welder was doing when the piece was being worked on. a good welder knows how to make any color show at his demand whether it be dark purple or gold(with full penetration).
