Default Almost killed the s2 :(

Well first off I have never really driven in snow/sleet before but anyways.... I live in Copperas Cove which is west of Fort Hood. The weather here has been really crazy, I mean really really crazy! Its been snowing, raining, and freezing temps. Everything was going great this morning except that everyone was doing about 35-40 on the freeway because of the weather. Well we got released early from work today so I decided to take the longer way home on back roads. I was driving 5-10 under so if anything did happen I could slow down quicker. Well I pulled on to clear creek drive and I was almost to the turn off the takes me stright to my house when I felt the back start sliding. I didnt know what to think or do so I left off the gas and hit the brakes...

Well I the **** locked up and I slid off the road, down a ditch missing some trees and ended up in between two smaller trees. I turned off the car and did a quick walk around ... Didnt find any damage except a few scuffs but other then that... I was scared shitless

anyways thats my story for the day... I just got done taking the bumper off and cleaning all the grass... Tomorrow I have to scrub my exhaust and clean the inside of the rear bumper of dirt and grass.. *sigh*

Cliffs: snow, ice, and cold weather conditions... Car slid into a ditch... scared the **** out of myself

I stopped reading after I read that. ^^

Your problem was you had no common sense and chose the rougher path home.

i'm glad you are okay that is the most important thing. i hope you at least learn something from your mistake so it doesnt happen again. the last thing you want to do is hit the brakes, all that is going to do is accelerate what is already happening - that your *** is sliding out. point your front wheels in the direction you need to go and give it some gas if you feel it sliding out .. and slow down with the throttle on the turns in bad weather on the back roads

Well the s2 is my daily driver and I have to go to work. Im in the army and usually a little shitty weather isnt going to stop us from working. The road that I was taking home wasnt a small road its not really a back road, I call it a back road because its the back way to come home. Anyways the freeways were packed and I didnt want to risk all the other retards on the freeway. There were 15+ wrecks today where I live and all were on the freeway

yeah i live in washington and its been snowing here on and off for the past month or so. the more populated highways, freeways, and local roads are always going to be the better route to go if you can. the roads that dont get much traffic will be more icy.

I just saw all of this on the news. I know exactly how you feel man, I live in Seattle and we've been having some crazy weather as well. I thought it wasn't gonna snow anymore at all anymore this year but last wed. it happened and unfortunately I just happened to drive my AP1 the same day, there has been snow and ice on the ground since then. AP1 has been sleeping for a week now. Like "immortal" said, never slam on your brakes, that'll lock up the brakes and make you just feel helplessly in trouble. But glad to know that you're ok. Drive safe man.

dont you think it may be a good idea to buy a beater? Considering that a beater costs between $500-1000 if you know where to look. This saves you from having to drive the S2000 in crappy weather or to crappy places (I.E. work). You could put the S2000 on storage type insurance for the winter as well...that way you could probably save some $$. $500-1000 is less than the cost of crashing and fixing your S2000. If you claim it under insurance, you'll still have a deductible of probably around that much...and your premium goes up. Tell yourself that a beater will save you money .

you might consider some form of driving school that will give you the opportunity to safely learn to recover in situations like this.

I work for a basic skills driving school, we teach skid recovery, evasive manuvers, braking techniques. It's aimed at new drivers though, i'm sure you could find something that wouldn't bore you to death without being a full race school.

glad you came out OK, stories like this often end with destroyed cars and lucky drivers, yoy managed to keep your car ok as well as yourself.

and just for reference next time you're sliding don't hit the brakes, look at it this way, when the car is sliding you've exceeded your traction right? braes take traction to function, so does gas, in that situation it's probably best to use any/all available traction to get the car turned where you want to go, then worry about slowing down when you're aimed back on the road.

just my 2 cents, all you guys who are slammin him should think back to when you used to do stupid stuff. Everyone's gotta learn right?

Right. it Happens your just lucky That you came out okay and The car isn't to messed up. Yea all gotta learn sometime I've done some dumb **** and lucky to be alive and bad weather never helps with a rear wheel drive car snow or ice just sucks. yea all can bust on him but doesn't mean you may of not done it yourself. Safe drivin schools help too. but sometimes you don't think of them when the **** is happening.

I have never driven in this type of weather before... Well bad rain yes, but not when the temp was below 34. Anyways I mean its a learning exp and I did learn from it. I went out today driving my wifes car and let the s2 sit in the garage. I spent all last night cleaning her head from toe making sure everything was ok. Everything did check out ok. Im still a little scared about even driving my wifes car or any beater for that matter in ice/snow conditions. Today it did snow too

But I take good car of the s2 and I clean dirt and grim off the car every other day and wax it every other weekend. Im just going to take it easy for a few days

We haven't gotten anything here in SC yet. Its been getting below freezing at night and raining all day, so any day now, I'm expecting an ice storm as usual.

Glad you and ur car are alright.

I learned the hard way in my first s2k that these vehicles and winter weather are a recipe for disaster. I slid around a bend in the road and spun out over a curb, and then through a field. I missed a light pole by inches, and ruined a rim from the curb. We have had crazy bad weather here in SW MO for the past 2 weeks, my new s2k has been garaged for the duration
