Default Main relay problems?

Fawk I was in the middle of the street in third gear and the car sputtered and died. Intstant loss of power, I was coasting fast enough to pop the clutch but the car still wouldnt start. Sat there and let it rest for 30 minutes and it turns over but doesnt start. i had to have the bitch towed home
This had happened last week as well but that time it started after a half hour of waiting.

Now my question is before I order a new relay is 1. would a faulty relay cause the car to die while it is running? 2. i read up the part about resoldering the relay, has anyone ever done it or is it cheaper to just order a new one?

Any other suggestions? I'm still thinking it might be the fuel pump, but replacing the relay is easier than the fuel pump from what I read .

Wait you replaced your head gasket or your relay?

Did the car die suddenly when it was already running?

I replaced the gasket...also i did pull the relay, but just put that relay back in because the part i ordered form a local parts store was incorrect. The car did die when running once, and also it would have problems starting just like you, one time it didnt restart and sometimes it took 20 to 30 minutes...

Hmm I wonder if it was the main relay that was causing problems and when you put it back it in temporarily pushed the solder together? I would think if it was the head gaskget I'd see some coolant leak or lose coolant?

Has anyone here tried to solder the connections? It looked like you had to get the angles perfect and stuff.

you should check out my thread on the EXACT same issue. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1858195 this just happened to me about a week ago. ive already replaced my alternator, ignitor and coil, and no dice. but tonight i am going to replace the main relay and see where that gets me. i should have started with the main relay and gone from there. but.. i actually most of the other parts laying around, so i swapped them out so i could rule them out first.

as far as soldering the main relay, if you have any soldering skill at all, im sure youll be able to do it. all that perfect angle stuff is overrated if you ask me. all you need to know is that you use soldering braid to remove the solder, and then heat up the post that is sticking out with the soldering iron, and touch the post with the solder. dont use the tip of the soldering iron to melt the solder and apply, because that would be the wrong way. use my way and you'll be just fine. that way you know its fixed and dont have to worry about that component being the problem if it continues.
i highly doubt it is a head gasket. your car would run like sh*t, if it ever started back up at all.

My car was losing coolant...and smoking white but it may just be a different issue...my relay does smelt burnt but i just pulled it out cleaned the fibers on the connection off and it works fine...may be different "Also car does not have to run like crap with blown head gasket it al depends on how much coolant is going into the cylinders, in my case just a small amount...just replace the relay...that will answer all your questions

From what I have seen Main Relays usually go bad when a car is started then driven down the road, turned off/back on and wont start till like 10+ cranks, seems to happen more with humid weather also. This was the symptoms on my g2 Teg and then it worked fine after i replaced it

Don't buy a new relay just yet. Pull yours out and remove the cover. You'll see the shiny metal solder joints. Just reheat them with a soldering iron until they liquify, then let cool. You don't have to remove the old stuff first. It's a free fix, so try that first.

Yah I just pulled the main relay (holy sheeyet that was a beeyatch) and looked at it really closely. It looked EXACTLY like the pix at that tripod site on the bad solder joint. I work with an electronics guy and I'm going to see if he can resolder the two bad ones, you can see a tiny break all around the joint now. If he does it I'll try it out and see if that fixes the prob.
