autoX practice tires dilemma
My friend and I are going to be racing an 01 s2000 in BSP this year. We would like to get some practice tires so we can get use to the car. We have our dedicated championship day tires (hoosier a6), but we are looking for some practice tires. The size we need is 225/45/17 for the front (due to rims size restriction and fender sizing). The rear has enough life to last us 3 more practices but the size is relatively common. I posted up some tires that were recommended from friends and the internet that had the size we are looking for. I just want to know if any of you guys had experiences with these tires. We are looking for grip somewhat near the A6 but also for something that has a longer life than the A6.
kumho v710 don't have 225/45/17s for the front tires of the s2000; at least not on tirerack website.
victoracer v700 from tirerack is $165.00 (each)
hooser r6 is $219.00 (each) http://www.aimtire.com/typ_cat...=6369
hankook z211 c50 compound priced at $118.00 http://www.aimtire.com/typ_cat...=6651
hankook Z-214 c70 compound priced at $198.50 (each). supposely a good autoX tire...that's what that AIMTIRE website says. softer compound than the z211. "The Hankook Z-214 provides nearly the wear of the TOYO while performing like the Hoosier" (AIMTIRE.com)
I tried searching this forum for any reviews on the hankook but didn't find any. We are leaning towards the z214 based on what the website said, but does anyone else have experience or heard of anything on these tires? Any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot.

go on ebay
in the search type "USDRRT"
that guy always has alot of used Hoosiers, Toyo RA1's. lots of stuff with 70% treadwear.
might not have as many at the moment, but in the summer he has all kinds of tires up for auction.

First off, if you want your practice to be worth anything then practice on matched tires. Running 2 of one construction in the front a different pair in the rear is a waste of time and money. The handling is weird as each end will have different breakaway characteristics not just different overall grip.
Example: The staggered breakaway can lead you to believe that the car is an oversteerer on corner entry when in fact its natural tendency is understeer. You tune the suspension to get rid of the loose condition on entry only to find that the car is a pushing pig when you switch to a set of matched tires.
I suggest you go with the VictoRacers all aound. They are a known commodity, will last lots of runs, are readily available and are cheap. The Hoosiers are too pricey and the Hankooks Z211 C50s won't last long, they feel like v710s only with a little more tread squirm (especially noticeable on braking and acceleration). I tried them last year on my ITR and thought they were a step below the v710 and did not last as long. The Hankook 214s are too pricey.

Alan

the nitto is a great tire. but it is definitely not comparable to a Kumho V710 or Hoosier A6
you'd be at a disadvantage if you were running NT01 in an R comp autox class. cause the top guys would definitely be running Kumho or Hoosier, maybe Avon Tech R.
but if you wanted to be fairly competitive plus have tires that would last you a bit longer doing autox/trackdays/time attack. then bang for buck the NT01 would probably be a good choice in that instance.

we will replace the fronts first since they are pretty much gone and we will run with all 4. thanks for the advice. i think we will try to find some victoracers now for front and rears. thanks to all that helped! much appreciated.
