I heard this but don't know if it's a fact or not.
Open the oil cap and look at the rocker arm assembly & such.
If it's bronzed it's a sign that the oil hasn't been changed regularly.
Somebody else said that in another post, I'm not sure as to its veracity.
EDIT:
Look for normal things, like somebody said, see if he seems like a mature driver, could be a sign of too much wear on the engine (or lack there of). Listen and feel for things rattling when you drive it, and inquire about any kind of extra sounds that might come with the car. Carfax it. Also, like somebody said, take it to a garage and have 'em do a buyers' inspection. If the guy doesn't want you to then he's hiding something and you should back out rather quickly - unless it's a matter of plates or something.

bushing are probably a bit out of shape.. when i bought my 93 you would hear a loud clank sound everytime u hit the brakes hard and sometimes going around turns. but yea just check everything u can but i mean if ur not paying out ur *** then im sure if anythign is wrong u can fix it easy and cheap... good luck man
thanks fellas...the car hadn't been run in a while so there were a few rattles until the oil got circulated...then it ran smooth...I might do a follow up test drive later this week...also, the driver's side window was failing...how easy are those to fix...thanks!!
