Default DIY (home-brew) Import Trailer, Plans, Kits & info, need input

I have been endlessly searching on Ebay and in other classifieds for a nice trailer to haul an import and the search is becoming tiresome. I see deals every now and then but even used trailers are going for $1000-2000 depending on the features/age so I think I may want to have a go at building my own.

I have heard the hardest part sometimes is getting homebrew trailers registered but I looked at the rules on teh NJ DMV website and they looked pretty good...it just needs to be inspected/weighed before being titled and they are state facilities here so its free.

Anyways...I have been searching around and rather than try to piece everything together like a turbo kit I figured there has to be places selling kits and I was right. I found a place a couple of weeks back that had everything except the metal and wood and the kit was $400...as luck has it I cant find the link now.

Here is one kit I found (thought the $400 seemed a touch light):

If anyone has any good links on plans, kits or info...could you please share them in this thread? I am going to keep looking for a deal on Ebay, but if it doesnt happen by the beginning of the season, I may have to build or buy new (yuck).

Best thing to do is go to a local small track with more lower budjet cars and walk around and see where everybody got there trailers. Around where I live 80% of the open car trailers come from a place in a really, really small town. We had a 16" dove tailed trailer, tandem with brakes on one axle with a wood floor and ramps and it was less than $1000 and was ready to go.

Did you check racingjunk.com? That is where I got my truck and trailer off of. Also go to the e-town swap meet. There are usually a few guys selling new open trailers cheap.

I'll check those places out thanks

Under, do you know when the ET swap meet is...I am sure that would be a great place to find one?

I am still very interested in the DIY thing too...thats just how I roll and I would like to build myself one eventually just to say I did. I mean, I have learned everything up to this point about cars based on researching and doing everything myself or some form of structured education.

Just something in the satisfaction of building something and using it

by the time you get everything to build your own you will have well over 1k in parts. especially if you go with new rubber.

trailers in NJ and PA that are registered over 2999lb gross require brakes on every wheel and also a breakaway setup with a battery backup.

There is a company that goes by econo trailer that make the least expensive trailers in the area.

At one time years ago I used to build allot of trailers and have the parts still available to me. If you decide to build one on your own I can get everything for you anc you could save allot of shipping by picking everything up. I am 5 miles south of Great adventure

parts list I can help you with

coupler 2 5/16
tongue jack prefer swivel style
safety chains
breakaway kit
lighting kit
5 or 7 wire plug with a leader
double axle hanger kit
2 brake axles 3500lb 5 x 4 1/2 bolt circle mopar / ford
2 fenders
4 tire/wheels dexter plain or white spokes trailer rated

Chris, definently check out the swap meet, just keep your eyes open.

My good friend's dad races in the Porsche Club of America, and had a buddy with an extra trailer he wanted to get rid of, its a 2003, great shape I picked it up for 1400.

Always deals floating around for us to pick up in dirtyjersey

That I didnt read on their site...good to know though and that makes a significant change in price.

I have to imagine a 16' trailer with a 2500lb Honda/Acura weighs over 2999 lbs
