Default 1 obnoxious buzz + 3 different mufflers= me about to go postal on my car!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant stand it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check it..

I've got a 94 GSR Sedan.

JDM ITR header
Test pipe
no resonator
Greddy Exhaust
Stock muffler

And, I have this buzz around 2500-3200 rpm (varies with throttle pressure).. I've bought 3 different mufflers, 2 stock and one magnaflow.. and I STILL HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!

The weird part.. I didnt have it when I had my stock header on...It was only AFTER U put the JDM ITR header on that it came about. My friends don't believe me.. But I dont knwo what else to think.

The reason why I think it's the header: The header is dented. Not bad, but it's dented on the bottom (where most aftermarket headers get dents). I mean, why else would it rattle? Its stock.. Honda woudlnt make a part that buzzed like this thing does.. UGH.
And it didnt do it before the header. Could it be because I don't have a cat and just a test pipe? The test pipe tubing is a lil smaller than the rest of the exhaust. Could going from a smaller diameter pipe to larger be messing up the pulses in the exhaust, making a buzz?

<grasping at straws here>

Or, what else could it be? It's not the muffer... there are NO heat shields rattling or rubbing agasint anything (already taken it to an exhaust shop). I'm at my wits end :S

Oh, and now, the magnaflow muffler I bought? yeah, I might as well go ahead and buy an Advanced Auto Aluminum "Racing Wing" to top of my new ricer sound

ANy ideas before I shoot myself?

The resonator was rattling, so I had it taken out.

Could it be because I don't have a cat?
I mean, there are ALOT of pple runnign test pipes, and I do alot of browing on forums and I havn't seen anybody mention a buzz when they took there cat out..

without a cat you can get a raspy/buzzing sound from the exhaust.

i suggest a high flow cat and a resonator anywhere from 18-22 inches should be fine. whats the sence of a test pipe anyways? they are illegal on the street and only give minimal gains of 1-2hp if any at all. and i doubt any ticket for loud exaust (expecially because they are 50-100 dollars a pop) is worth the 1-2hp. just my 2 cents.

Honestly.. I have a test pipe because thats what the exhaust guy put on. I had teh ITR cat (gutted) and he just took off the flange on it and connected the exhaust from the header to the catback... not my idea.

I have another resonator as well, which I'll go ahead and have that put on too. If I still have the buzz after that, without a doubt it's the header.

But here's hopin its the cat

It's the resonator. The car must sound god awful without the resonator and cat.

Run open header and you'll hear that same buzzing sound but amplified.

Thats with an Open header (ITR). Went to the track that day. I can't recall any buzzing.. It was just LOUD.

And, it actually doesnt sound bad at all w/the exhaust as it is. It sounds fine all but 5-700 rpm.
And it was buzzing with the resonator in.
This is what it sounds like (had the resonator then, but it didnt make much diff in the sound as you might think)

I was tryin out some new tires.

Is your header dented?
ANd I get migranes so I CANT have a loud exhaust. If you've never had one, you don't know how bad it is. And ANYTHING loud is NOT what you want...

I am sorry but a dent in your header will not give you that sound...maybe it's because the exhaust is bottle necking, at the muffler, and the test pipe...

I have a ******* rattle that sounds similar mine comes in at about 3k. I either have to speed or drive slow on the freeway or I have to listen to this ******* rattle but I just recently tore my car apart there was a bolt missing from the exhaust manifold bracket on the side. and I ordered it in from the dealer so I hope that fixes it, but I have the stock exhaust manifold if that and all new gaskets and exhaust bolts don't fix it I'm going to just push my car off a cliff.

Take off your header and look into the pipe from the end that would normally connect to the Cat. You should see TWO pipes There should be sound deading material between those two pipes, if not then you are hearing a harmonic resonance of your down pipe or header pipe or A-pipe. I did a write up similar to this problem.

Post what you find.

And if you have the 94 or 95 gsr, then you certainly have the problem that can be fixed for about $30. No need to destroy car.

But I dont have a GSR header.. I have an ITR header. I read your article before..And thats what I thought it was.. But there isnt anything in the ITR header.

I'm actually goin to Niagra Falls tomorrow and I"ll be there till Tuesday (I live in FL) so I'll be away from my puter. I"ll get some work done whenever I get back the following week and I"ll post what happens....

Thanks

So the ITR Header is completly different? I thought they would be similar in design. I am wondering if maybe there is another part of the exhaust that has a similar double tubed design where the same problem could be happening. Are you sure the manifold has not cracked? Some headers can crack on the back wall where you wouldnt be able to see it unless removed. It may be behind a heatshield, under enough pressure the gasses would come thru.

sounds like an exhaust leak. my buddy had one at the bottom of his header, and it would only make a nasty raspy noise at 3k

Ok.. So another $35.00 spent on my exhaust having the cat installed and......... <drumroll>

It's still there I'm not surpised. I've thought it was the header the whole time and nobody believed me.
Now, it's much much much better.. sounds alot better and I can actually drive w/out hearing the buzz, as long as I'm driving slow, whic is how I drive most of the time anyway

So, the plan now is.. I"m gonna try and trade my ITR header for a 50 shot n2o kit and play with that. I'll just go back to my old GSR header and be on the lookout for a DC Sports or something like that.
I'll just weld a skidplate onto the bottom of the new header so it won't get dinged

rule of thumb: for every 6 feet of pipe, you need a resonator.
