Default rhd conversion w/srs question

okay so my hatch is rhd and i am going to move out of state (to north carolina, i live in ca now) in march. i have to pay the $300 fee to have my car transferred to nc and they do an inspection. well my vins all match b/c i did the firewall swap but from the bottom of the rack & pinion hole and around the other mounting spots. the vin was never cut out (yeah i had it all re-braced and welded the hell out of to make it structurally sound) and i dont have a motor swap (so all vins are original, oh but i did put my original vin on the new dash of course) and the car passes smog tests with flying colors, i did all the wiring correctly with the help of solder, heat shrink tubing and a helms manual. so my last problem is the srs system, and im sure it has to work for them to pass me. they may not have to know that it actually would work in a crash but im sure they will check if it is all there and connected. at least that is what the dmv ref says. i have the non srs steering wheel and the ca cops never notice. so i am going to add srs back. has anyone done this? i still have my srs parts from before. can i just add it all back on and be ok or will it deploy on me? it is all plug and play from what i remember but i am worried about it hitting me in the face just when i get comfortable. any help would be appreciated.

Dont connect the battery when youre installing it. No power and it wont blow.

I wouldn't do anything to the car until you know for sure the inspection will include it. People in Ca don't know anything about what NC will want.

If it is needed, I'd just put the srs steering wheel back on, and if needed hook the light up to one of the other lights that is on while starting the car.

I know for a fact that any vehicle will pass with an srs light on because, there was a time when vehicles didnt have srs systems, thus meaning your car will pass inspection with an srs light on

Your fact is FUCKED up.

You know nothing.

If the car came STOCK with airbags than they must be functional (in most inspections).

Some states it'll pass w/ the air bag light on, some states it won't, it also depends on the year. Call the NC DMV, jeez.

That totally did make my day though, "I know for a fact" when you have no clue what the expletive you're talking about .

I took my car to inspection with horses tied to the front of it, and surprisingly, even though horses USED to be tied to the front of cars, my car failed.

Any suggestions?

No, it's like the CEL it should come on when the ignition it turned to the "on" position and they do check.

i appreciate all the input but i think i am just going to stick with my original post and make the srs actually work again. i'll unplug the battery when i do it as most everyone agrees i should. the dmv was so busy today i got stuck on hold and didnt get my answer as to whether or not they check it. still, i want it functional. once in awhile i get someone who kinda moves (not quite swerves) away from me b/c they dont see a driver. if they cause someone else to hit me i want the bags to deploy. i will update this monday and let you guys know what they say. still i will check this thread in case anyone has any more suggestions. again, i appreciate the help from everyone.

SYNDACATE is right!!! I am an ispection mechanic in WV which i'm sure has some of the lowest standards for inspection, and a car with the air bag/ srs light on willl not pass inspection in my shop or any other reputable shop in WV. So dont be so quick to tell him that he is wrong because he is not and you are.

Holy expletive ****! he doesn't mean on all the time. He means it should should be ON when starting the car to let you know that its working.... hence connect the srs light to the cel light that does the same thing... we all know you wont pass if the light is ALWAYS on! holy crap!

for making H-T a **** place to ask a question

Just take your time if you're going to reinstall it. I'd freak out that the sensors weren't right or something and worry about eating airbag for honking the horn or something. I think I would rather eat the steering wheel.

I am a North Carolina State Automotive Safety and Emissions Inspector. any vehicle 1995 and older only get a safety which costs $9.10. Even if the check engine light is on it doesn't matter because it is not OBD-2. Here is the run down on what has to be on your vehicle.

Lights: all Factory Equiped lights must work and headlights must be aimed properly
If you have L.E.D. 3rd brake light 100% must work. License plate lights must be WHITE in color and be seen for atleast 50ft. Amber or White is allowed for front turn signals/running lights. BLUE headlight bulbs are illegal(but sometimes not caught by the inspector) High beam must work and High beam indicator on dash must work when highs are on. Blinkers must with with dash indicator as well.

Wipers: must not be torn or dry rotted Clips cannot be broken

Mirrors: must not be cracked(passenger side does not matter for cars)

Window Tint: Cannot exceed 32%. if it is greater that 32% it is illegal and constitures a failure.

Tires: must be 2/32 or better to pass. Any belts showing constitutes a failure.

Brakes: must be within standards all around E-brake MUST hold around 1500rpms

Exhaust: MUST have catalys converter. Must have muffler. No holes in the pipe between engine to tip.

Gas Cap: YOU NEED IT

Other EVAP: All parts listed in the Inspection book, vehicle must be equipped with.

I hope that helps you. Where abouts in North Carolina are you moving to?

Dude, you're the man. Im moving to Cary. Thank you for the help, it is very much appreciated. I plugged up all of the srs system other than the steering wheel. I will be doing it tomorrow. But as for the inspection, I would definitely pass then. Thanks again. Nathan
