Default Is there a trick to taking out the engine? I searched.

I tried searching this topic, but if I missed something I am sorry and maybe someone could just send me the link I didn't find. But here's my problem. I am removing the d16y7 out of my 97 hatch, and I have everything disconnected and bolts removed, the engine is free to move now so that's not the problem. I really don't want to take off the tranny though, because that seems like more work, but it seems like whenever I try to hoist the motor, the crank pulley catches the frame and lifts the car. Now if I take off the pulley, will the motor be able to lift straight up? I tried dropping it down through the car, but then the alternator is hitting the axle. I just am looking for an answer that doesn't involve taking out the trans. if there is that answer. Thanks in advance.

Either way the trans is going to have to come off. Best thing to do is pull the trans with the motor, your just making more work for yourself doing it the way your trying.

I just really didn't want to remove all of the sensors and **** on the tranny as well. It's really not too much work for myself because the tranny had to come off to go on the new motor anyway.

take the radiator out first.. more room.. put the hoist on the chain all the way by the timing belt side... this will lift on a angle.. its tricky.. did you take the shift linkage out?

if you can drop it through the bottem and the only thing in your way is the axle then why not just remove the axle. You might have to remove the motor at an angle. That what I had to with my b-series. A D motor the same size as Bs or are they smaller?

I don't know about the ek, but on the eg with the axles out I could lift it out. Tranny and all.

I never had a problem yanking it out the top. Radiator has to come out for sure. Maybe twist it on the hoist so the tranny's more forward of the mount. That should give you more clearance.

You pulled the front mounts completely off the engine/tranny?

Yeah.

What I would do (find easiest) is pull the axles and drop it out the bottom. Or, likewise, you can remove the tranny and just pull it right out the top. It's easier to pull off the tranny than it is to pull off the crank pulley .

like said...whenever i do swaps, i put the front of the car high off the ground with jackstands, remove the rear braket... put a jack under the complete motor (long block and tranny) and onbolt both side mounts and slowly bring motor down to the floor...have someone help you...pull the jack out and motor should be on the floor....you gonna have to tilt the motor a back a bit and slide out to the front/driver side of the car...might have to remove the bumper to do it...simple as cake..

I pulled mine right out the top of my EK no problems with the tranny attached. Pull the axels and the radiator and just mess with it till it comes out. I dont think your trying hard enough.

all you have to do is rotate the tranny forward (remove the radiator) and thenraise up the timing belt side so the entire engine is at an angle, make sure if you are using a hoist have a balancing bar it will make everything a lot easier with the tilting.

To the people who say you need to remove the tranny to get the engine out, i have to ask, have you ever removed an engine or swapped an engine?...

I can't count how many motors I have swapped in EG's, EK's, DC's, and CD's and everything from D's to H's. The only thing I am missing is a K.

Take the radiator out of you haven't, remove the axles, connect the chain to the bolt hole on the back side of the head timing belt side and the little hook on the front of the tranny, hook up the hoist closer to the timing belt so it's at an anle and the timing belt is up, tranny down, and lift. It will come right out. The only thing that is even remotely hard to get in and out is an H in any of them. D's and B's come in and out like butter.

That's how I normally do it too. I've gone out the bottom as well. Bottom's easier if you have a lift so, you can lift the body off the engine. I've dropped the whole thing down on a piece of plywood and slipped it out from under the chassis too. I know some shops will lift with the axles attached then work the axles out of the tranny as the engine comes up. I was going to try that next time so, and see if I can avoid pulling apart the suspension.

Leaving the tranny is makes it rediculous. I don't even bother changing the clutch with the motor in the car they are so easy to take out as one peice and then just work on outside the car.

well this is my first motor swap, so it really is all just learn as I go and I was really thinking the engine would have come out easily on its own.

I know its been said in this thread, but out the bottom is easiest.

Make sure the axles are off...
-If the car isnt already, Put the car on jackstands at the highest possible notch.
-Hook the motor up to your cherry picker.
-Undo your last couple of bolts holding it in so it swings freely.
-Lower it to the ground & slide it out the passenger side between the brakes and front bumper area.
Like butter, trans and all.

well to get it out the bottom, am I still going to have to remove the driver side axle? or is it easier just to take off the alternator?

Of course you have to remove your axles .... they're kind of linking the transmission to the rest of your car.

right, but i was thinking that when you were saying to take it out the bottom, that would be easiest for leaving the tranny in. but i guess the tranny will come out. hopefully tonight....
