I took my 91 4d civic sedan into the shop(1.5 d15), they told me that either my head, headgasket, or block was cracked,

Is there anyway a noob like me, could check and see if they are broken? i have the tools, would it be that hard to unscrew some bolts and look around?

can you be more specific on what problems your having with your car?

 

What are your car's symptoms? White smoke out the exhaust? Over heating? Losing oil, coolant? Coolant and oil mixing? You need to have a leak down test performed. It will give you a real good idea where the problem is. The sparkplugs are removed and a fitting is screwed into each cylinder. The piston for that cylinder is placed at top dead center and they fill the cylinder with air. The gauge measures how much % or air your cylinder is leaking. Air will escape past the failing parts and normally give you a sign where to attack.
If you dont know what you are doing you dont want to go start just undoing bolts.
