Default handbrake question

i have a friend who bought a 2001 civic a couple days ago and the previous owner had a dog that chewed up the ebrake handle cover and button, and he wants to replace it.so far the only answer i've goteen from ppl is that you have to cut it off,but that seems kind of drastic to me.is there any other way to get the cover off the handle?

i think you have to remove the silver clip, then slide the rubber out.

it's probably easier and cheaper to just get a whole new assembly:
