Looking at 1995 HONDA CIVIC EX (V-TECH)
Son just turned 16 and wants a civic..What are common issues with an 01-5. He wants a Vtec with manual trans..Any good starting pointers would help..Looking at 95 but trying to get the most bang for my buck to start him off right

01-05 civics are good cars, I think there was a recall on the headlights in 01, but I'm not completly sure. Their engines are very reliable and the transmissions hold up good as long as you don't torture them.
A 95 civic hatch or coupe would be a really fun car. They're light and you can put virtually any 4cyl honda engine in them. If you can find a good looking one cheap, I'd pick it up.

putting myself in the shoes of a parent. i'd probably get my son a 01-05 civic just because it's newer, it's going to be his first car, and it's going to need to be RELIABLE. older cars, of course, are going to have problems. specially once you start modifying the engine.
so get the 01-05 for your son and just let him do cosmetic items, the car will last him a very long time.
