Has anyone here ever used a Coordinate Measuring Machine?
Yes, used several in college...pretty awesome. Are you hoping for some type of crash course here or something? I took a class called Micrology...started with your basic steel rule...haha, moved all the way up to digital multi axis measuring machines that have amazing accuracy. It worked laterally with a class called Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. If you wanna learn man...school's where it's at.

its manual. we dont use automated cmm's as there is no point.
not really. if the software is set up right its just point and shoot.
we start up the program, take a measurement for the "0" of the program and go from there

We use an automated CMM for measuring parts where there are LOTS of measurements. Since we are a repair facility and we use the CMM's to check our work before returning parts to service, we see the same part over and over. It's easy to program the CMM to just run through and measure coordinates on its own for various parts.
Oh yeah, I work at a jet engine repair facility. Big expensive parts and the FAA constantly breathing down your throat.

What resolution do you guys get? I am working on a few projects with ATK and the cmm they use to measure stuff with aargm doesn't seem to have really high resolution, at least down to what we are measuring.

We measure to 0.0001 inch.

Haha, it does kind of sound like that...but if he is, he's going to be disappointed as to how little he'll learn without actually using one.
