Hello, I dont know much about engine timing n stuff, but I was watching my friends car get dyno'ed the other day and noticed something very interesting. He baselined 128 whp, and with the turn of a couple of bolts, the car but out 13 more whp. Im wondering if anyone knows how to adjust timing without a dyno at hand, is there anyway to street tune it without a dyno?
For the record, here are the mods I have done to my B18B LS engine
Blox Intake, Blox Intake Manifold, Vibrant Header, Custom 2.5 inch Exhaust (header back), Vibrant Catylic Converter, Civic Si Fuel Pump,

 

Adjusting the timing works with your spark. If you have a EGT (exhaust gas temp) gauge then you could play with it a little seeing where the lowest temp is. I wouldnt recommend doing it without a dyno though, but if you want to play with it do it at your own risk.

You may notice a little bit of power at top end but you may loose throughout the powerband which makes it not worth it.

 

1) We need to know exactly what mods your friend had

2) The tuner may have "messed with" more than just a couple nuts and bolts

3) There are few ways to adjust timing but since you don't have adjustable cam gears, you can't really adjust "cam timing" Even if you did, it wouldn't help much on stock cams.

I'm thinking your friends distributor timing must've just been way low or something.

 

How do I know whether to adjust the intake or the exhaust end of the timing on the ignition

 

My friend had a GSR with bolts ons, including
Exhaust, Skunkk2 Intake Manifold, Greddy Header

 

Yea now that I think of it the tuner definately adjusted the distributor, I still want to know if there is a way to know how to adjust both the intake and the exhaust timing without a dyno, simply based on what mods you have and street driving

And he only made 128whp on the base run? WTF? Please tell me its a Mustang Dyno or something.

 

yea his baseline was retardedly low, i think a stock GSR puts out 128 haha, anyway maybe thats why they were able to put out so much hp on timing adjustments alone, in the end he made 146 after more timing and a/f adjustment

 

128 deff aint right

 

If all he made in the end was 146 then somethings seriously wrong. I made 150whp stock with crappy intake, crappy exhaust and stock header. From the sounds of it his timing belt is way off.

 

so...what would I need to do on my car?

You can't really do anything (I don't think) except advance the timing a little if you wish to like 17-18 degrees.

you cant without a dyno to see if the adjustments you made are either helping or hurting the engine.

stock gsr's should be putting out ~140whp. something is likely wrong with your friend's engine.
