Install power steering on a 1997 Civic CX 3 door
My mother has a 1997 CX hatch that came without power steering, as in it came from the factory without it. She would like to have the power steering, and likes the car so she wants to install power steering on it. Is there a DIY on how to do this? I searched and found nothing. Basically, since she lives a thousand miles away, I'd like to find out specifically what parts she'd need to buy so that her mechanic can install it. I assume just a rack, pump, hoses, and bracket. Thanks for helping out. Please only answer if you definitely know exactly what the parts or procedure would be...
The car doesn't have wiring for P/S so I'm assuming this would be a very difficult task. She's better off just buying a new car.
What kind of wiring is involved in a power steering pump? What is there a pressure switch? I imagine you'll need to get a PS bracket, PS pump, PS lines, PS rack. Installing the pump will be easy. It's the rack that will be difficult.
My girlfriend has the same "problem" with her DX. So I'm curious to see where this goes.

youll need the PS bracket, pump, lines, belt, and rack. The wiring I am unsure of.
The rack is really much easier than people would think. It was 8 bolts all 14 mm and the 2 castle nuts where the outer tie rod meets the hub assembly, which were both 17 mm. There are 2 10 mm bolts inside the car that hold the racks shaft into the steering column nuckle that need removed to pull that shaft out. once you get the rack out of the inside of the car, you can slide it as far as possible to the passenger side than lower it towards the ground and pull it out of the driver side.

thanks for the help! She got a great deal on this car with less than 40k miles on it, and wouldn't really be able to afford to get another car right now. I want to find those parts for her and have her mechanic put them on. He's very knowledgeable but asked that I research this some for him before putting him to task. If anyone has ever done this, let us know how it went and what you had to do. Otherwise, thanks to those who answered my question and take it easy...

I have yet to do it, but I did change my rack not even 36 hours ago, which to me would be the hardest part of the whole power steering swap. the pump and lines are self explanatory. the rack is as well once the car is in the air. Like I said earlier, the rack is only held in with a few bolts that are very visible, and not hard to get to at all.

So taking the rack out was pretty straight forward... once the car was off the ground? I always thought it would be a pain.

I thought it would be as well. but it was really quite simple once I started going at it. Most people I talked to thought it was part of the subframe, but it is not. If any of you guys have questions regarding the removal/replacement of it, feel free to ask away
