Default Speedometer/Odometer not working right...gas mileage dropped too????

I have a 96' DX with the stock cluster...no tach. The speedomoter seems to be cutting in and out. Somtimes it works...sometimes it doesn't. I'll be driving and then all the sudden it will drop to zero and either go back up to the speed I'm going or not work completly.

I've also noticed that I seem to be getting about 12 mpg less on a tank of gass. Is my gas mileage crappy or do you think it is related to the odometer not working properly as well?

What could be the cause of the problem?

I also noticed that one of my belts is whining on really cold mornings...also when I turn around corners sometimes. I do not have power steering or a/c. So basically the only belts I have are the timing and the alternator belts. Could either of these things be contributing to the poor mileage?

Any help is most appreciated.

Check the VSS first. I had this same problem (minus the belts and gas mileage). Make sure the plug on the sensor is down all the way (listen for the click).

*** Maybe you have a failing accessory/alternator. That could explain the bad mileage.

I noticed my odometer stops completely too when the speedometer shuts off...so that explains my crappy gas mileage.
