Tire size for stock rim Accord
We have a low miles 91 Accord LX with stock rims. Although Honda specifies a 185/70/14 tire we are considering a set of 195/70/14 tires. If our figures are correct the tires would be roughly 5/16" taller and 7/16" wider. We're wondering 1)if there would be any clearance problems, and 2) is the rim wide enough for a 195
or even 205 tire.
or even 205 tire.
There are several considerations when getting wider tires. You need to keep the outer diameter of the tires the same, for clearance as well as to maintain the accuracy of the speedometer/odometer (and to prevent making acceleration slower). You can do this by getting lower aspect ratio tires (that's the "70") and/or by getting larger diameter wheels. You need to make sure that the tires will fit into the wheels; tire manufacturers publish specs for their tire sizes indicating the range of wheel widths that work.
195/70-14 is too large in diameter to work on your car (2.3 percent larger than stock). If you want 195 treadwidth tires, you could get 195/65-14 tires and they should work okay (0.9 percent smaller diameter than stock). I think any 205 treadwidth tires will be too wide to mount on your stock wheels, which are 14x5 (five inches wide).
Why are you considering wider tires?
