Default New CRX owner

I just picked up a 88 Si for a daily driver and was wondering what are the best mods I can do to start with?
Also, what is the difference between the 88 Si and the newer models like the 91?

What is recommended for a little extra power?

TIA

I'd say i/h/e cam, but maybe a turbo would be nicer
Check out http://www.crxpower.net/Specs.html if you want its got the specs of the 88-91s on there. According to the chart, the 91 si is about 150 lbs heavier than the 88, I think in 91 the Si got 4 wheel disc brakes too.

on weight and the brakes.
How many miles on your new CRX? It really depends on what your looking for I,H,E or a JR supercharger IMHO would be good if you want to keep the d16 and don't have a lot of miles

Just do hedders + exhaust. Intake is not worth it...yet. Just put a K&N in your airbox. (or go for the intake if you have no other plans for F/I) Save for turbo or SC.

Congrats on the new car, as for power i say a nice turbo kit would do well, if you don't have the funds then just go with the basi i/h/e and maybe do some suspension work.

is that really the only wat to go for good power, SC or Turbo?
Can I buy SiR parts and put them or will they not give me any gains?

What do you want out of the car? And what do you want to spend? That will best determine what your options are.

How much would it cost to buy an SIR engine?
Would it be hard or costly to install?
I am just thinking in case my engine dies

I guess I am mostly trying to get a feel for the power and type of mods I can get into the car, I know what I can do with a TYPE R, but I do not know what is out there or the options I have with a CRX. Not looking to spend too much money now, just looking into the future.

A 1st generation B16 into an 88 CRX Si will probably run in the neighborhood of $2500 give or take. That would include, motor, tranny, ecu, axles, mount kit, shift linkage and all the other little stuff that will pop up on you.

The 88 is going to be lighter. The only thing the 90 has that the 88 doesn't is rear disk brakes. The 88 is rated at 105hp and the 91 at 108. With the weight difference probably dead even though. There are a lot of subtle differences between the two. I would probably go with the 88 for several reasons. Should be cheaper, it is lighter and I have an 88 so I am a little biased.

that's cool, I just got it yesterday and my girlfriend was telling me she found a white 91 with 100K for sale, just wondering if I made the right choice. Man, I've wanted a CRX since 94', but then when I got my first loan for my fist car I could only buy a car that was no less than 92' so I bought a 92 teg. I was http://www.crxsi.com/resources/diff_sec_gen.htm and it seems that the 88-89 are good models, except for the side impact beams and the rear disc brakes.

Can I convert the rear drums to disc brakes?
Braking is always one of my first upgrades, I like to have good brakes when I need them.

The best bang for the buck you can put into your CRX is a bone stock B16A motor. If you can try to hand pick it for the best one. The difference between the 88si and the newer ones like 91si is that the 88 Si features an independent door without the seatbelt lodged into it like the 89-91. Also the 88si compared to the 89-91 is that the 91si has rear disc brakes and the 88-89si's dont. You can convert the rear brakes from drum to disc by using the spindle off any 90-91 CRX, 91-00 Integra or 92-95 Civic Si. You use the and a Ebrake cable from a 91si and its fine.

The other difference is that the 88si rear suspension is the drawing board for what we call the " type R ". For all those who are knowledgeable in CRX's knew that only the 88 came with a double wishbone independent rear suspension that uses ball jointed bushing shocks like type R's instead of forked ones like the rest of the Hondas. 88si Seatbelt clips are located on the frame of the car as well as the seatbelts. 89-91si Seatbelt clips are attached to the chair and the seatbelt retracts into the door. Other than that there are no other signifigant differences.

oh yeah.. 88si is about 200lbs lighter than a 91si

good because the one my GF found it says it's automatic and it says SI engine, which I kept telling her it is probably that the owner put in a SI engine, but she asked me to check just to make sure. Thanks for all the help.

which is possible by replacing the long block with one from a Si and retaining the tranny.

Yeah B16a oversized go-kart on steroids You may like driving it more than the R

Ok this may sound stupid, but I swear that the 88s were supposed to handle better for some reason, but something like the rear ends kicked out or were too twitchy for americans so they changed it the next year. Somebody has to know what Im talking about.

actually, i dunno, but do u mean teh 88 CRX HF?! i know they come with different rear control arms( gee i ferget, someone please refresh my memory) that r the same as ITR's rear control arms...my cousin used his HF rear control arms in his 91 civic DX, and now he sits on some genuine Tanabe Sustec pros that he got from lucky auction on ebay($300 freakin dollars! oh my!)..... but to hookin that piece up, do wut u can afford, to the extent of ur desires!
