it is a 2000 ex civic coupe and i literally got 200 miles to the tank. i just got it and it does have a CEL i counted and i think it is 43, which is fuel system. what exactly is that? i found the codes but it doesnt exactly explain this cel. i checked it another time after i reset the ecu and got one blink which is 02 but which o2? things are a lot different for me coming from a ton of EFs to this. thanks

Well first off you need to post the code you got, please don't reset the ecu.

Without knowing for sure what codes it's throwing it sounds like secondary o2 sensory is going out, could use some new plugs/plug wires, clean air filter and an oil change though.

 

Take the car to auto zone or checkers and have them pull the actual code. Counting blinks is fine for some stuff. Actually hooking a scanner up and getting them to pinpoint the problem is the only way to go.

One long blink is 10 and each quick blink is 1.. Goodluck

and if your throwing a CEL for O2 sensor, this is most likely going to be the culprit for bad gas mileage.. aside from a tune up.

 

i havent even taken a look under the hood really yet. where is the secondary o2? on the exhaust manifold or closer to the cat? like i said i havent looked yet, just guessing.

 

secondary O2 is after the cat. Primary will be after your header close to the inlet of the cat.

 

wtf i drive a 97 civic 4 door lx and get around 190-200 per tank which is like 8 gallons o_o

My 94 EX gets around 230 per tank. At that point I fill up with about 9 gallons. So about 24 mpg.

 

It could also be a bad fuel pump. You didn't say how many miles are on your car. When mine went bad, so did the gas mileage.

Besides a basic tune as suggested earlier, be sure to adjust your idle and timing.

Another consideration is to have your injectors cleaned. You can either send them out or dump some Chevron Techron in your gas tank or Seafoam into your intake.

Secondary O2 will have no effect on gas mileage other then the CEL he gets from it... In other words, its not going to cause much problems if it were to fail. The primary O2 however WILL cause a drastic decrease in mileage. Code 43 and a Code 1 = Primary O2 took a crap on you.

I get right around 300 with my D15. Go get it scanned and find out the problem.

It's easy to make stock mileage boosted if you stay in the boosted range minimally. Your car is essentially stock until your turbo spools up

wow a ton of replies!! the thing is I am used to the 530 miles a tank on my rex for highway/380-400 city....so this is really bad for me. Also i did not drive with a heavy right foot, i try to drive to get the best gas mileage possible, that is what has stumped me? thanks for all the responses though, i am going to get the code officially deciphered and replace what needs replaced. also the car only has 49000 on it so i doubt fuel pump but you never know?

 

Ok i went to checkers and got an obdII test and the result........P1706 TCM A/T Gear Position Switch Circuit Open.......what does that trash mean. they couldnt tell me at the store either. I looked it up and it says that it wont shift from 1st or 4th perfectly on its own, so it is stuck in either 2nd or third all the time....kinda makes sense from the gas i'm burning but it feels like it shifts fine. IDK anyone know how to fix? thanks

But what is this "stays in 2nd or 3rd..."? How can you not tell if your car is shifting correctly?

Thats just it the car seems as if it is shifting fine, thats why i am asking if someone knows exactly what this code is....if you google it you get this

P1706 means that the tranny fails to shift other than 2nd-4th gears and lock-up clutch does not engage.

the tranny every once and a while doesnt downshift correctlt, or actually downshifts too soon maybe not sure. anyone had this?

 

A/T FTL...sounds like an internal tranny problem...could be a solenoid tho...what RPM's are you taching out at on highway speeds?

Oops, must have gotten those mixed up I spose....but you're right, the o2 sensor on the header will cause mpg drops.

Well considering I live at 5300' above sea level and before I would get 240 miles on a tank but ever since I threw the snail on I've gotten better gas mileage. I'm thinking it's because I don't have to press on the gas as much to get going, that and my kewl tune . I'm not going to go around a damn forum making up miles per tank just to flex my e-***** so go ahead and stuff your "bs" flag.

Boost is where it starts to eat fuel up...I can boost 1-2 psi with normal driving and get 300+ miles on a tank.

I just filled up and due to the snow and a lot of idling time (warming up) I got 270 miles on this tank.
