Default Car won't start-- any ideas?

Hi everyone,

My car wouldn't start today. It turns, but doesn't start. Instead, the turning sound will come intermittently come to an abrupt stop. I can't really explain the sound, it almost sounds like a cassette tape stopping all of a sudden.

A couple people I've talked to since then seem to think it is the fuel pump.

Any ideas or suggestions?

thanks,
bob

try runnin a wire from the power wire on the fuel pump....under the back seat peel back the casing and cut the yellow wire with a black stripe then attach the other wire to that yellow wire then run it straight to the battery or to a power source in the car then hook up a switchso its not constant power otherwise you will drain ur battery

don't do ^this^

so does the engine turn over, and then just STOP? or does it slowly stop cranking like your battery is dead?

you may want to check for fuel by pulling a spark plug after attempting to start the car for a few moments.....smell the plugs for fuel

why did you say not to do that???? its easier then tracing the wire all the way back to the ecu and running a new wire through the harnesses

try banging on the starter with a pipe or something, sometimes the motor has a dead spot in it.

because odds are the wire itself is not the problem. i think it's rash to immediately rip the back seat out and start chopping up your wiring harness.....not to mention you can't run the fuel pump on a toggle switch for long without ******* it up.

bob, 1st you need to see if the car is getting fuel. either pull a spark plug, undo the fuel line and let it drench your engine when you crank the car , whatever you prefer. if gasoline is making it to the cylinders, and your engine didn't explode, seize, etc, then it's an ignition problem. just narrow it down....and explain your problem a little better

hate to break it to ya bro but ive been runnin my car like that for over a year now and it is just fine if there was going to be a problem it would have happened already.....and its kinda obvious if you check every fuse and all the wiring and you dont find nothing, then you hook a volt meter to the wire and STILL nothing then everything points to THAT wire...so why not solve the problem with your own theory........

hey i'm 100% in favor of ghetto fabrication when all else fails....however i still would not recommend that someone hook their fuel pump to a spliced toggle switch.

i'm thinking bob hasn't checked the problem out thoroughly enough to definitely single out his fuel pump power wire as the culprit.

JdM_RACeR07 i'm curious about yours now....do you always leave the fuel pump running whenever the motor is running?

yeah before you fire it up u just flip the switch and you will hear it cut on and you leave it on then when u shut ur car off you just flip the switch again.....i had the button switch for a while mounted on my dash but it went out every now and then and i had to replace the battery, and if you forget to turn it off it will also kill the battery....i went through 3 or 4 batteries the first couple of months from not remembering to turn it off but thats why you get the warranteed ones lol

I have to agree with mahatma.. you are not sure that its fuel problem in the first place.. you should probably check your starter teeth see if any are broken off but with out being there to hear the noise you kinda have to explain it a little better..

maybe you should try this !!! THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION..

1) disconnect the distrubutor from the harness.( so that you are not getting any spark)
2) crank the motor as if you were late for work ..

does it make the same sound like you spoke of???????

if it still does.. check the starte and flywheel.
