fenderbender
this pic is from late august when i first got my car, but i thought i'd share my story.
i took my car to get tint on the windows, i hated driving around without tint, i almost felt as if i had no privacy. i'm always very aware of where i park. i always either park far away from people, or park in reverse. i've seen too many accidents with people backing out of a parking space.
i get my car back from an audio/tint store putting tint on it and they drive it up to the front of the store, and as i'm backing up out of the parking space, i hear a crunching noise. I automatically assume that i've run over something since I'M FULLY LOOKING BACK! as i pull the car fwd and step off i see that i just ran into a telephone pole!... damn blind spot
i was pretty upset for the reason that , 1. i would have never parked in such a tight parking space myself 2. i just had an accident in my new car, and 3. i just felt like a moron (i keep on asking myself how i missed a damn TELEPHONE POLL!)
anyway, that same weekend i get on my navigation and find a bunch of body shops (around Austin), and as i drive from shop to shop i'm getting all the same estimates. 1600-2300k. now i'm no body expert, but i know enough to know that that's a lot of dough, and that i don't have that type of out-of-pocket cash. i call a buddy of mine who works for Progressive and he says that my monthly payment will jump from around 130 to about 210 at the end of my next 6month billing cycle.
a lot of body shops were saying that they were going to have to replace the whole fender (which was going to involve pulling off the glass, replacing the ivtec decal, etc...) as well as the rear bumber bumper. i was more than upset, i was like, "it's a bump, a fenderbender! pull it out and throw some paint on it!" ... i had a '57 Chevy in highschool and i got the whole thing painted for about 2500 bucks.
but anyway...
my sis has a bmw 3 series that she always seems to be getting into small fenderbenders with. i took it by her body shop guy one weekend (she lives in SouthTexas) and surprisingly he wasn't like the other guys who ran all the parts by the books and computers, he simply wiped the area off with a clean rag, ran his hand over the damaged area and said he'd have it done by the end of the week. i'd usually be skeptical at such a person, but seeing how he had a very need and tidy garage with a hummer, jaguar and a porsche boxster being worked on too, i trusted him with my civic.
he did an awesome job and only charged me 250 bucks!!!
anyway, here is a pic of the damage that he fixed, my car looks like a million bucks again and i learned was that my car has one hell of a blind spot and that i need to look back as well as use the side view mirror while in reverse.
