I just purchased a tranny off my buddy for hella cheap... he said he got took it from his friend about a year ago, and in turn, he'd never used it.
So he recalls that the tranny is out of a stock `89 Si, but is a little unsure... I haven't taken my set apart yet, (mines blown in my stock `90 Si).
Is there a spline count I can do that would tell me it is an Si, short gear ratio tranny? or maybe a number tag or summin'?

 

unfortunatily all DX, HF, Si, and ZC cable trannys are tagged L3

spline count will only tell you the year

21 spline is 88, and 20 spline is 89-90

there is a picture out on the internet somewhere that shows you how to figure it out, by marking the input shaft and the diff and turning the input 10 turns or something like that in 1st gear and then seeing where the mark on the diff lands, if its like 10oclock is a si ect...
