Default Smoke with burnt smell coming from engine department, 93 Accord EX

1993 Honda Accord EX

This usually happens when I first start it up and drive it for a few minutes after it has been sitting there a day. A burnt smell with a little smoke comes out of the engine compartment, not a whole bunch of smoke but enough to worry. However, as I drive it tends to only happen at very short instances at random times. It smells like kind of burnt rubber.

Belts look fine, smoke seems to be coming from front of the engine compartment, first thoughts are a leak of some sort dripping on something hot.

(BTW, I am a noob at car repair).

I would appreciate any help.

Probably an oil leak that burns off when you start it up. Are you losing oil?

Check when the ebgine is running for about five min, look under the car and see if you are dripping antifreeze. It will give off that smell. CHeck you radiator to make sure.

does it make any wierd noises? I would pop the hood and check to see where the smoke is coming from with the engine running for 5-10mins like Dabzzmn. But if it doesn't do it until you drive... maybe it's your radiator fans? Takes awhile for your engine and coolant to heat up before they turn on and might be shorting?

chances are you have an oil leak.

Chances are that oil leak is leaking onto the exhaust, burning it and making smoke.

Look for an oil leak.

My car(92 accord lx) has the same problem except it happens after the car has been running for about 5 minutes. Very small amount of white smoke and burning rubber smell that seems to be coming from around the exhaust manifold area. when i turn the car off i can still smell it and see the smoke for another few minutes and i can hear a real slow dripping noise from underneath the heat shield. i havn't looked into it too much yet. i am losing a small amount of antifreeze so i think its like dabzzmn said.

You may have an issue with an oil leak on a hot surface. Some could be;
1) Valve Cover Leak - oil dripping on top of exhaust manifold
2) Spark Plug Tunnels - small oil leak allowing oil to burn on top of head

or an antifreeze leak
1) Radiator Leak -coolant blowing back on hot manifold
2) Water Pump Leak - coolant leaking down onto exhaust a' pipe
