Low Gas Mileage on my '07 Si
So i've mentioned this in another thread, but I thought I'd start a fresh one here to get other opinions, suggestions, and stories.
Long story short? My '07 Si seems to be getting horrible mileage. The best I got was my first tank, 95% freeway, NO vtec, 27.5 mpg. Since then it has gotten progressively worse -- my last tank I got 19.9 mpg, and probably was in vtec ~20 times on the tank.
Current tank: NO vtec, 30% freeway, 10 blocks left and I've gone 120 miles. That's roughly 240 miles on a tank with no vtec whatsoever, and that sucks. What's the deal? I'm thinking about calling my dealer and asking them to check it out, as I'm getting concerned.
Comments/suggestions/etc?

Suggestions: drive like a little old lady, shift before 4k, save teh vtechk for special ocassions, drive like a little old lady.
I average about 29mpg with some spirited driving but the rest of the time i try to drive as civilized as possible.. if youre doing a ton of highway driving you should be getting the advertised MPG of 30+.
From what i've heard/experienced the fuel economy is kinda shitty at first but progressivley gets better after a few months or enough mileage

I've driven like a total old lady (all shifts before 4k) for this tank, 122 miles at half tank
The car has about 2200 on it. WTF?

get a oil change, i felt the same way and that seemed to help. during the breakin period the tank is working alittle bit harder. once evrything meshes together it will work out better for you. oil change should help the engine with a fresh start.

Someone want to chime in here? I heard this shouldn't make a difference.
I've also heard my mileage should be improving as I tack more miles onto my car, but I haven't seen improvement at all yet...

uhhh... no.
the worst thing you can do during the break-in process is to drain the oil that the MFG puts in there... all new Honda vehicles come with a "special" and rather expensive form of break-in motor oil that is to remain in the motor for as long as possible(usually 5k miles, just watch your maint. minder til it gets to 5%). changing your oil sooner than need be WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR GAS MILEAGE!
how do you figure the tank is working harder during break-in?

I average around 25mpg. That is with a lot of vtec'ing. I have an 07 and have about 2700 miles on the car. The best I've gotten was 29mpg. The worst, 24mpg.
Yeah, see? I feel like I'm the only one I've heard of getting this poor of mileage
Could it be running rich or something?

First get an intake. This will help with gas mileage, I average 330 a tank w/ shifting at 4k. I hit VTEC a bunch. And this is probably 75-25 city driving
I am very impressed with the MPG I get.

Hey, I know all of you have Si's for the most part, and my case would be different but, I noticed a problem with my gas milege as well and I have 12k miles on my car. I just drove back and forth from my house to the state capital and I had to fill up too many times. I think the best my car did on the way up and back was 270-290 something like that, and burning 11 gallons that's not really adding up too well on a non-si that's advertised 30-38 mpg. ... Small gas tank leakage?
If you guys believe you are going to get the EPA numbers you will always be upset. In all reality very few people achieve those numbers, most get ~10% less.

PS: I am sure that what we think of as driving like a granny isn't really all that efficient.

I don't expect to get 32mpg...EVER, but driving my car extremely lightly should always yield 23+ imo.
Other people are getting averages of like 25 mpg, why aren't I? I'd bet $50 I'm driving my car more lightly than those people...

Yep. Obtaining EPA estimates means you would have to shift below 4k all the time and not travel above 55mph on the highway, which NO driver short of a 90 year old ever does.

There are a number of possible reasons for this and could include:
Type of city driving (how much time do you spend stuck in traffic jams?)
Type of gas (does your gas have any ethanol in it?)
Temperature fluctuation (it can have a profound effect on mpg)
Improper tire inflation
Different wheel/tire weight
Etc.
I agree that under 20mpg is horrendous, as I get 4+mpg better MPG beating the holy hell out of a heavier car (Accord) with a larger displacement engine. If it really bothers you bring it in and check to see if there is something wrong.

I get around 355 or more miles to a tank of Gas. But I only use BP Gas. I tested different brands of fuel and I would get like 285 to 298 a tank of gas using Texaco, same miles with Chevron and Exxon, same driving habits. But BP actually gave me alot more. I also have 17K miles on the car. Now when I first got the car my milage was pretty bad, like 270 to 280 miles to a tank of gas. But there are so many factors to what your gas milage will be.
for you people that say you are gettin x amount of miles per tank how do you use that as a consistant base to check your gas milage? Do you wait till you have two or three bars left and see how many miles you have right when it goes to two or three bars? Just wondering how you go about measuring your milage that way but it doesn't seem very accurate to me or at least compared to dividing milage by # of gallons of gas.
I wait until i have 2 bars or 1 but sometimes i fill up at half but i always keep an average of miles driven between tanks and etc so i have a consistent average.
Just seems like one time you might fill up right when it gets to two bars and the next time fill up right before it gets to one bar. So you see it as the same. You might be getting exactly the same milage but you would think it was better in the second circumstance. So this could make the difference from you thinking you got 300 miles per tank or 320 per tank. When really you were getting the same milage. Does that make sense? It just doesn't seem very precise thats all i'm saying.
When I first got my car I paid very little attention to the fuel economy, so I don't remember what it was like then. Now I get about 25-28mpg and I vtec no less than once a day. about 95% highway....
