Default my new 07 LX questions (Idle and mpg)

hey guys I just bought a civic LX a few weeks ago and I have a few questions.

first of all the car idles rough, I actually took it to the dealer and complained and they said that it was normal. so my first question is... when a 2007 civic LX is warm and idling at about 650 should I feel the steering wheel shaking? and if I look at the engine while it is idling should I see it shaking?

Second I have been getting what to me is crap gas mileage. on my 94 civic Si with a b16a swap I would get 30mpg driving like a maniac and hitting vtec at least two times a day. with this civic I drive like a grandma and get like 27mpg or less. and I just drove to vegas and after filling up on the way back I found that I got 29mpg while driving there. And I was averaging between 80 and 85mph. so I want to know if this is normal also. oh and the stick shift LX was rated 30mpg city and 38mpg highway.

thanks in advance for your help, and hopefully this kind of stuff has not been asked before. I did a search just now and did not see it

when my car warms up it just idles high. but at normal temp, idles at about 650 and my steering wheel does NOT shake. it only shakes, but only for a little bit, when i put it in 1st, and release the clutch to the sweet spot (idle drops a tiny bit) just to get me crawling in and out of my garage. but it only shakes for no more than 2-3 seconds. then it idles normal again. i dont think its normal. at least in your case.

the answer to this and possible solution to your other question regarding idling is this. the car operates at its best, you might say, after its break in point. which is about 1000 miles. i babied my car till 1000 shifting at 3-3.5. and i noticed too that my gas mileage wasnt as good as i thought it would be. now im at 2500 miles. my gas mileage is awesome and i shift at 4-5 on average (or 3.5 when i dont have anymore gas left) the best ive gotten on a tank is like 360.

hope this helped

My 06 LX Auto sedan (which gets 30/40 mpg) has never hit about 30mpg on a tank.... EVER. I drive like a grandma in it, as does my wife.

I bitched and moaned to the dealer because I bought the car solely for the gas mileage, and he told me to quit driving it so "spiritedly". I gave him the dumbest look in the world.. then explained to him it was a 4 DOOR AUTOMATIC civic, could I be driving a bigger grocery getter?

Anyways, he told me it would get better with more miles on the car. He was right - at 4500miles on the car, my mileage has gone from 27ish to 29ish. Yay for me?

Yes, it does suck =/ I highly suspect its because my auto tranny absolutely, horrendously sucks.. It likes to keep the gears low and the revs high for no reason what-so-ever, and even after numerous trips to the dealer, they find nothing wrong with it. Such is life for me I suppose.

Edit- Sorry, forgot about the idle. Mine idled rough in the beginning, and still does when its maybe 10 or less degrees out. Just get through the break-in and it should get better.

the car now has 1600 miles on it. the break in period is over and I am pissed off with this car. it looks nice but drives like **** and I don't think the 140hp and 128 ft/lbs of torque factory specs are true. And the dumb *** technician said that a rough idle is normal. oh and also I live in Southern California lol the temperature is never less than 30 degrees outside. If these kinds of problems are normal then it is time for me to go to the better business bureau.

oh and also has anyone noticed a clicking noise coming from the passenger side when someone is sitting there? I noticed a soft clicking noise when my gf was sitting in the passenger seat. Then she shifted her upper body forward and the clicking noise went away then when she rested her back on the seat again the clicking noise was back. an if nobody is in the passenger seat.. no clicking noise. wtf people I used to love honda I am frustrated with them.

I'm dissappointed with my car as well. And I obviously didn't buy an auto 4 dr civic for the performance, but my car doesn't even downshift when I punch the gas, just sits in a high gear and slowly picks up speed =/

Just once I want to hit 30mpg, the LOWEST I should be getting. I made a trip to the cities once doing about 65-70 the whole way there, at least 95% cities. I got there and filled up, 29 mpg. How pathetic.

yeah i didn't buy my stick shift LX for the performance either I got it cuz I wanted a car that worked 100% and that I wouldn't have to spend time working on.

Now I have to spend time waiting at the damn dealer while they work on it.

i dunno, im loving my lx so far. its stick and i have like 7700 miles on it now. the idle CAN be a bit rough if you have the AC on a lot and if the alternator is trying to compensate for other power losses (power windows, steering, etc). but other than that, even with an aftermarket exhaust, my idle is pretty smooth. i think you should take the car to a different stealership and get it checked by a tech over there, most of them are full of **** so sometimes you have to travel around to find a good one. as far as the mpgs go, you have to keep in mind that the ratings cars get are based on many factors, like actual grandma driving (like staying exactly the speed limit and accelerating like a sloth) and how hard you break, how quick you take turns, etc. every driver is different in their style of driving and therefore everyone will have different mpg results. also keep in mind that their highway ratings are at 55mph, so im sure if any of us cruise controlled at 55mph for an entire tank of gas, we would get similar results. i drive like an idiot which is probably what account for my average of like 29-30 mpg haha. anyways good luck with the car, and i hope you like it better eventually

eh right now I am wishing that I stuck with my 94 civic with the b16 swap. that car was much easier to drive.

Well like fandirabbani08 said, my 07 lx only shakes when the ac is on once in a blue moon. Other than that i rarely ever feel my steering wheel shake. And I dont think my engine shakes either.. i hope. lol For gas mileage.. i hit approx 320 miles on a full tank. I have about 2900 miles on the car and even if i do drive the car hard all the time it still gets pretty damn good gas mileage. All I can say is take ur car back to the dealership and yell at them to give you a new one lol

I'm @ 20,500 miles right now and I avg 30mpg... with as low as 26-27 on occasion.

P.S. I drive pretty slow. 2.5k/rpm shifts cruising @ 65mph max.

320 miles on a full tank is not good gas mileage. this civics tank is 13.2 gallons so unless you get 320 miles on like 9 gallons of the 13 then even that is not really all that great. but yes I DEFENITELY will be going to the dealership and yelling at them, lol but i am pretty sure they will not give me a new one.

oh and I usually drive between 70 and 75mph on the freeway and still get crap mileage like 28mpg and crap and in traffic it is much worse of course

The only issues I have had with idling have been when the air conditioning is on or rolling down the windows. Other than that no problems. For mpg I couldn't be happier I get about 35mpg on average. The lowest I have gotton is 29 with some pretty spirited driving. I would take it in to another dealership.

Same car here. Bought a 07 civic LX four door auto as a temp commuter until the car I want is out next year. Purchased the car last Friday and refilled for the first time earlier tonight with roughly 300 for 8.8 gal which gives me 34mpg. Hopefully it will increase to near 40s when it's broken in. Maybe its the driving habits... I hardly ever break 3krpm unless I am accelerating on to freeway.

I do noticed a tiny bit of rumble during idle once in awhile but for at most 1 second. There is also ocassional lurches but nothing significant. Weird clanking noise backing out of drive way or slow stop.

Like others I didn't buy this car for performance hence my current driving habits. All will change when the 08 m3 comes out :-P

crappy mpg = ecu related as someone who had been getting 23's, he took it to the dealership, got a new ecu installed and was getting mid to low 30's...
rough idle = weather.
However, even cold, my steering wheel doesn't shake. I don't have the lx model though...
for lemon civics

jesus christ after hearing all these milage you guys are claiming...I guess i'm spoiled.

I'm pissed if my full tank of gas doesn't provide me at least 420 miles

I usually hit 410-420 miles before i have to fill up @ 11-11.5 gallons. I've been pissed lately because I've been getting 390miles per tank. I guess it's the cold weather.

Then again, driving habit is a major one. Everyone claim that they don't overrev but you do know that braking waste fuel too right?

I always coast to a stop and never have to use the brake on the highway. I always leave plenty of room between me and the car in front of me, that way i just let go of the gas to slow down instead of hitting the brakes.

my highest milage to date was 45mpg on my all-highway 600miles trip. Car hit 320miles at near the halfway mark and filled it up with 7 gallons.

Never have to use the brake (highway driving) and i always leave enough distance so that i don't have to use the brake to slow down...just let go of the gas.

i have 359miles on right now and i have 4 bars left.

I think I'm very lax when it comes to driving.

As I said before.. my tranny is messed up. It refuses to downshift if I put the pedal all the way down. So my revs never get high, rarely past 4k. Rarely.

When I'm driving and I see the tach approaching 3.5k, i ease up off the gas so it shifts, then press down again.

When I see a redlight up ahead, or I'm going to be making a turn or whatever, I click it into neautral and coast the whole way. I couln't be easier on this car, yet it refuses to break 30mpg. if you are getting 45, then I want my 19,600 I overpaid for my civic back.

I might have to call BS on this one.

Anyone notice that people with the '06s seem to be reporting higher mileage than the people with the '07s in general? It might be because theirs are "broken in" or it might be because something is different/wrong/whatever in the '07...

RIGHT????

I got like 28-29 mpg during my breakin period.

Yes i love making BS up on messageboard for kicks!!! how you know????

BTW, driving home from work, my car now have 369miles and it's 3 bars of fuel left. Would you like me to go out and take a screenshot of the milage and fuel bars?

No, I believe you because my Ferarri gets 35mpg. Sometimes some of us just get exceptional mileage

Here are pics on my camera phone. 369 miles with 3 bars left. I drive 10 miles to and back from work 5 days a week. Half of it is highway and half is rural.

If i go all highway without stopping or slowing down or braking. Highest i hit was 45mpg, 320miles at near the halfway mark and took 7 gallons to fill up.

Like i said i've been pissed lately because i'm getting like 390miles per tank, it's the cold weather. but 370miles with 3 bars left, i'm sure i can hit 410.

that should average out to be around 37 mpg. because the car always takes 11 - 11.5 gallons when i fill it up.
