That's the block serial number, unique as a VIN.

The block is aluminum, which is a non-ferrous (i.e., non-magnetic metal).
There might be ways to bring up the density from the previous stampings, but I don't believe its very easy.
Also, it looks like the block was sandblasted, which may have eroded the original markings. <shrug>

You can see plain as day that they ground off the block and stamped their own with number punches. I don't know if I would be so quick to call it stolen, but it is sketchy as hell. Saying b18c5 will attract more buyers because they think its somehow the holy grail of the b-series and are willing to pay more....even on a used, sold as is mystery e-bay motor.

True. Reminds from years back when some SoCal street racers would restamp there B20VTEC blocks to B18A .
I would not buy that ebay block

If it isn't a Type-R block... My guess is a GSR block then. B16, B18B1/A1, and B20 blocks do not have block girdles. Only GSR and Type-R.

it can be done, and usually pretty easy...i learned how to do to it in forensic class over the summer; but now i forget...

I cant believe there are bids on that thing. Its obviously built, but other than that you have no idea what you are getting into. I wonder if RS Machines could verify if that block was in fact built by them. they would have the true specs and that would be a bit more comforting. and the ITR block girdles can be machined to fit any B Series block AFAIK.
lol @ that block stamp
