Default Alternator making loud whining sound

Yesterday my alternator, or what sounds like my alternator started making a loud whining sound.
The first time my alternator made the sounds, it caused my brake signal on my gauge cluster to blink, when I didn't have the emergency brake applied. Every-time after that it has just made a loud sound as it is spinning really fast.
What could cause this? Is my alternator dying? I have also noticed recently that my electric warning light in my gauge cluster does not illuminate if I have driven the car for a bit, stopped and then restarted, it does not light up while the other lights light up during startup.

Thanks

That sounds just like what my alternator did before it died in my old civic hatch. One day, it just started whining like crazy, and charging and electric lights starting going haywire, and after a couple of days, it gave out. Best bet is to change it now then to have it go out somewhere while driving

Doh
That is what I was afraid of.
Anyone know what an alternator runs for a 92 Honda Civic?
Is after market OK or his Honda alternator a must?

IMO, thts the alternator-pulley's bearing ( better get a new used-alternator, wrecking yard?)

double check the alternator, belt (loosen) . See if thrs any 'play' when you spin it.

Thanks for the info.
I find it weird that it only happens once and a while.

I'll have to get it changed.

About how much does a new alternator cost?

Thanks

Check the tension on the belt.
But from the sounds of it your bearings are on their way out.
Go to Checkers or Autozone and pick one up. I think I paid around $200 for mine with a core charge.
