Default Where to dispose of old steelies/tires?

I have a set of old steelies/tires that I do not want. Can I just throw them away in our dumpster or do wheels/tires need to be disposed of in a certain way (i.e. at a junkyard or tire shop)?

If they were mine, I would try posting in my region on the marketplace forums here on h-t.com that I will give them away to anyone willing to pick them up. Seems like there's always someone who will be happy to take them off your hands...

I sold mine for $100 last winter to some local guy. People are always looking for some winter beater wheels.

Of course...in California, they might be a bit more difficult to get rid of.

i would, but:

1) i want to get rid of them asap; and
2) they're 13" stockies with one tire that blew out and 3 really bad uneven worn tires. doubt anyone would want them even for free

ASAP is understandable. Tires should be recycled, but any tire shop can do that (though they usually charge).

Even for free, 13s might be hard to get rid of. You can always throw away the wheels, but tires are supposed to be recycled.

I have a feeling the junkyard will be your best be. They will probably just take them off your hands for free.

I hope you're not serious. People doing construction projects have to PAY for those big dumpsters. They don't provide them as a free service so that the general public can fill them with all kinds of crap!

You could try calling your local sanitation department to ask their advice. I know in my town, they will accept large items (sofas, etc) only as part of a "special pickup" for which they charge $25.

Wow, around here it's illegal and if they catch you, or your plates, you are in big trouble. Also, tires should be disposed of properly.

Worse comes to worse just to go walmart and pay the 2.50/each to have the tires taken off your hands. Hell, give them the rims.

If the rims are free and you live in/near the Los Angeles area I'll take them.

up here some of the dumps will take them for free..the tires as long as there loose of course...and then you could recycle the steel at a steel place....or pay 2.10 per tire to have them thrown away
