Help Request: Engine sputtering (details inside)
***first off, want to thank those who are always there to help me in a hurry. i have searched and will include my thoughts on what the problem is. all in all, I am asking you all for insight on my problem as I feel it may be rather common and dealt with quite a bit.***
Not long ago, I decided to do a compression test on my R, and when I pulled the plug wires, I found that the gaskets leaked oil to where the spark plugs and wires were. So, after posting on here to get led in the right direction, that problem was fixed. Today, I installed new OEM spark plug wires and put in new plugs as well as change the oil.
After consulting help on how the wires plug into the distributor (thanks to Ali and RPRacing), I was all set to fire her up.
When I started the car it sounded like a Subaru. Shut it off immediately and triple-checked my wires and they were correct. Tried again and still sounded bad. It had trouble idling and when I would rev it up and give it a little bit of gas, it revved extremely slow and stuttered really bad as it fell back to idle. So I shut the car off and pulled it into the garage and noticed I had a CEL.
Before I checked the code, I pulled the new plugs and they looked exactly how plugs are supposed to, and there was no oil residue which I was concerned about there being from the leak.
The CEL code I got was code 86. I looked it up and found that it is the following:
ECT Sensor (Engine Coolant Temperature) circuit range / performance problem
Just looking on what to do next. I believe I should change out the cap and rotor and see what happens from then on. Any advice?

Jake,
I recently worked on a neighbors civic with similar problem. Needed new wires.
Have you tried putting the other wires back on?
I'm still in town, don't be afraid to give me a ring.. Pz

I was having a similar problem, but in my LS (not sure if it makes a difference).
Rough idle and it bogged like crazy when given some gas. But i was throwing different codes; misfire in all cylinders, and something about some ignition control or something of that nature.
What I ended up doing was replacing the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. And the problem went away. I could not pinpoint the problem down to a specific thing because I replaced everything at once, but upon inspecting everything I would say the rotor looked like to be the culprit.

okay, i knew i should have replaced the cap and rotor once i threw on the new wires
but im still confused as to why that code would suddenly come up after changing the wires. doesn't seem like that would have much to do with it
thanks a lot ali, and josh, i'll give you a call in the next few days if your not busy

There is a green plug underneath the dizzy, check it. You might have knocked it loose when installing the plug wires, or just puleed the wires. That seems to be your issue.

x2.
If that is not it, as mentioned try to old wires again. If the problem is still there do the cap and rotor while your there. Wear items are wear items. If your doing the wires, why not the cap and rotor. Long shot could be ignitor too. GL.
