Default My filter came apart and my turbo is shot! pics inside.......

Basically while cruising, the middle piece of my filter came off and went into the turbo. It looks like it was put on there with some type of weak glue or something. The shop who I bought it from is offering me to replace the $25 filter for free, and sell me a new turbo for wholesale price. I havent spoken to the manufacturer yet but wrote them an email. I really don't care about the filter it's my turbo that's putting the hurt on me. I'm asking for atleast a free rebuild or replacement of the turbo. I'm not going to release any names. If I have to I will. But hopefully this will not happen to anyone else with these stupid filters. I think it's totally messed up that this filter was made poorly! What do you guys think I should do or ask for??

I think they should replace the **** that broke for free since it wasn't your fault! How much does a brand new turbo go for wholesale, BTW?

I am definitely going to have to disagree. The shop is merely a dealer, not the manufacturer of the filter which caused the problem. If they are offering you a free filter and a turbo at wholesale I think that is more than fair. Your job then is to contact the manufacturer and have them reimburse your losses (labor NOT included). If they aren't unwilling to reimburse as a result of their parts failure, then you would will EASILY in small claims.

I know it's alot of **** to go through, but some states may allow you to collect additional damages if the company puts you through hell.

It is certainly not the shops fault that sold you the filter. If you were driving a new Ford and hit a pothole making the airbag pop and break your neck, would you go after the dealership or the manufacturer? It's a no brainer.

wonder if anything like this ever happened with the apexi filters?

i was even thinking of going as far as mesh and a filter. and definitly stay away from a filter with pieces that could easily come off or apart

I've seen that a lot with the cheepo filters. Stick with a good name brand and you don't have to worry about that. K&N, AEM, Akimoto, Apexi, etc.

Basically the same thing happened to me about a month ago. The Filter element from my APC became unattached to the base. Nothing bad happened though. However, the filter was due time, it lasted for about 4 years. Not bad in my book. "Intimadator" air filter, wooo. Special sized K&N for me now.

You won't get a penny from the dealer. They sell parts, they don't sell warranty's. Be happy they are even offering to give you a deal with wholesale cost.

Those filters are absolute **** and that is why I only run mesh or the Apexi units. Back in '00 I had the same issue and I could not boost for some reason. What did I find? That gay *** glued 'button' in the middle of my compressor housing. A buddy of mine had his gr35r also destroyed by one of these filters.

This again reaffirms the fact that any system is only as good as its weakest link. I'd never run anything less than a K&N..sucks that this happened to you bro.

I use mesh on my turbo inlet! I bought it from lowes, as it is used for a sink filter. I put a hose clamp around the inlet to hold it and havnt had a problem yet. Ill check on it occasionally to make sure it is still secure and notice there it will actually cave in the center a little bit, but that is it.

what sense does that make? they have a responsibility to make a product that does what it is intended to do. it is their fault, they made the product for him to put it on. you sound just like a scumbag that would rip customers off and not give 2 ***** just like the filter maker.

I had that happen last month. Luckily for me it was not on my turbo car anymore, and just got sucked into my throttle body. I've had my filter for four years, and it was on my turbo car for 2 years. Damn glad that didn't happen earlier. Shitty for you though.... good luck man.

Oh and you may not need a totatl rebuild, prolly just a new intake wheel and a re-balance.

however if the filter wasnt intended for a turbo application that may be one fault of his own.

Bitch to the filter manufacturer and see if they'll help you out with the cost of a new turbo. Run a better filter and chalk it up to experience with ghetto filters.

Looks like a simota filter, comeon man, tell us the brand and quit being embarrassed about the "cheapness" of it.

On the box I'm sure it says for off-road use only. Also, what do you expect for 10 bucks? I think common sense here should tell you how far crying about it is going to go.

Daaamn that is wack. That makes me feel good about how K&N filters don't have any metal parts like that on them (although they probably wouldn't fall apart anyway).
