hardest springrate on coilovers???
hi there
Im about to buy Spoon Adjustable Damper Kit (Coilovers) for my ITR. the question I have is; which springrate kg/mm is suggested? My teg has aprox 90000 km of streetuse and lets say 600 km at the track. The bushings are what I know never been changed. A-J racing recommend 18kg front and 16 kg rear. anyone with experience from hard springs and oem bushnings?
thanks emanuel

If the bushings need to be changd, they need to be changed; your choice of spring rates should have little to do with the condition of your bushings, and vice versa.
And just a heads up, but 18kg/mm is incredibly stiff. Its about 1008lbs/in. Stock spring rates are in the range of 180lbs/in or something like that.

if you're planning to dd, that sounds like a little too much, 18/16. I'd go with something a little softer for dd but if the car is solely for track use, 18/16 is perfect

Running 400/400 rates (7k/7k) on my daily driver GSR, and thats about as hard as is reasonable for street use. I love it, but the girlfriend says she needs a sports bra to be comfortable riding in it. YMMV, but if I had anything more than the 5 mile commute I do, I would never run stiffer.
oki I see what you guys been writeing and I realised that I did forget to say that I“m running on K & W“s coilovers right now. I belive that its the version 2 the guy that sold me the teg said it was Variant 3 but it sure dosent look like them.
I use the car DD during summertime aprox 7 month a year but I also drive as much as UI can on tracks/timeattacks(thats why I bought this car). I need to be faster on the tracks

Its pretty simple to tell if you have V2 or V3, since V2 is only single adjustable while V3 is double adjustable...
Spend more time driving if you want to drop your lap times. Again you don't want to be running 18k springs on a daily driver.

yeah I know that about single adjustible or double....I just had a tought if its an older version of K & W..but havent found out if there is an older version...I also belive that im running on 9kgs in front and 6kg in the rear and thats my dd ride....have now problems with that so the stiffnes isnt my concern
I know its a big step from 9-18 but you can adjust them alot (5 stages) my buddie has the T1R maxdamper for his s2000 its 10kg and he got 4 adjustable modes on them and when number 1 is in use its softer then original...

The adjustment will adjust damping, not spring rate. If you reduce the damping, whether its compression or rebound, you may simply end up with an underdamped 18kg corner.
While ride quality is subjective, there is definitely a limit on what springs can be comfortably (and safely) used on on a daily driver. IMO, 18kg/mm springs is way, way past that point. If you're dead set on those rates, however, that is totally your call.

i will consider what you have said when I order my coils
maybe I will buy 3 sorts of springs so I can test for myself and see what I like most....cheers for all your opinion...btw do you drive alot on track and what do you use for coils?

I do not! Although we have our sets on a few Honda Challenge cars across the country. There are a lot of guys on H-T that do track their cars. Pose your question to the guys in the "Road Race / Auto-x" forum if you do not get your answers from this one.
Like what PIC said. The higher you go the more unsafe the car is for the general road. Unlike the racetrack that is smooth all the way around. The street is very bumpy even if you don't feel it in a car with stock springs. Go with two full sets of springs. I definitely would not go past 13k front and 11k rear for your car. People in the roadracing section have a thread for used springs.
Currently running 12k front / 10k rear on an eg and wouldn't go any higher. When I hit bumps in the road, my car sometimes goes airborne slightly and loses traction.
My rule of thumb is the higher you go on spring rates, the slower you drive in the daily commute. *although my car can take long highway sweeping curve at a phenomenal speed*

i had the spoon, i m running 18,16 set up.
honestly, no worry about DD, showa made good shocks and you don't feel you are running 18k spring. the damping rate is perfect for 18k spring. it even smoother than Tein RA with 14k and BC racing spec with 12K.
i say go for it if you track your car. OR run 16, 14 if you still scare a bit for DD

i'm running Spoon threaded coilovers with 12k/14k springs. i personally wouldn't run anything higher than that on the streets not because its unbareably stiff, but because it tears your car apart (especially up here in Canadia where the roads are bad).
like frozenb said though, the Spoon/Showa dampers are valved to match/handle the rates so the ride is not as punishing as you would expect like that of lower end coilovers with similar rates.
mine are set on the 3rd click and the rebound dampening is already maxing out the springs. the small ruts and potholes aren't bad, the big "drops" and "waves" in the roads are
hopefully that helped

thanks guys! especially frozenb and fuko(nice nick btw :D)
the roads here in sweden are quite good but the goverment tries to slow us drivers down by building roadbumbs so that we must slow down to like 5-10 km/h and cruise over them argh!!!! and for us who has lowered car this is a real pain in the ***. Otherwise it is in general good, its all about planing how you should go to the place your going..i dont care if its 2km longer as long there is a better road to go on
I dont want to shake my car into pieces so maybe I“ll order some extra springs so I can test what feels best for me and my beloved teg!
thanks once more!!!
