I don't know why you say 215/50-17 would be ideal. It's WAY too big for a 1998 Prelude, assuming that's what you would put it on.
The 1998 Prelude (either version) came from the factory with 205/50-16 tires on 16" wheels. The best tire size for 17" wheels on a 1998 Prelude is either 205/45-17 (0.8 percent larger diameter than stock) or 215/40-17 (1.2 percent smaller diameter than stock). 205/45-17 tires are usually approved for mounting on rims 6.5-7.5 inches wide, and 215/40-17 tires are usually approved for 7.0-8.5 inch rim widths. I would not mount either size on 17x6 rims.
However, are you SURE the rims are 17x6? The smallest commonly available 17" tire size is 205/40-17, and those aren't usually approved for anything narrower than 17x7. The only 17" sizes approved for 17x6 are 205/50-17 and 215/50-17, both of which are MUCH too large in diameter for your car (4.2 and 5.8 percent larger than stock). I would never, ever use a 17x6 rim on a 1998 Prelude for this reason...
