I was running Pennzoil syncromesh then my axle seal started leaking so i replaced the seal and filled the tranny with GM syncromesh because thats the only thing i could find in my town and a few friends said its basically the same thing but since i put the GM stuff in its harder to get into reverse and shifting into 1st is harder. I just wanted some ideas why this would happen? Whats so different between the brands?

 

Did you put the FM (friction modified) syncromesh in? Run a search for syncromesh, there have been a few topics a couple pages long regarding this issue. Might find something useful in there.

 

No just the regular GM syncromesh

 

Some people swear by that stuff, some people say it was the biggest mistake in their entire live.

I used to use it, but had the same problems as you where eventually it would be harder to get into gears. Drained it out and used 10w-30 oil instead and its been better.

 

I prefer to use Honda MTF if your tranny is fine. If you have minor grinds, I'd use GM Synchromesh. You'll want to make sure you get the Friction Modified Synchromesh. I've used it on many cars and works great.

Here's a good thread on the gm syncromesh https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=549469&page=1 , I believe you use a combo of 2 types of gm fluid. I used this combo with good results , but I've heard of people saying that it will wear the seals , but I havent had any issues.

 

I heard that the new GM fluid that i just put in my car is thicker than the old stuff..

 

Somebody drag that ****** in here who said it ate away his gears and syncros.

Buy the GM Syncromesh "friction modified" - not the regular ****.

Or use Honda MTF as many other have suggested.

For me? I never actually gave a expletive and none of my gears in my 6 (manual) cars I've had in the three years that I've had my license EVER grinded unless maybe when I was starting out I put it into reverse going like 1 or 2 mph. Aside from that and missing an occasional shift way back when I was 16 NONE of my manual trannies EVER grinded "normally."

So I really have no experience with either.

I've used MTF on other peoples' cars and i really haven't had any complaints. I used the friction modified GM syncromesh on 1 or 2 civics as well and one guy roasted his tranny like a week later, and the other guy said that ****'s liquid gold

So take your pick, really doesn't matter - though the crap you have in there should be drained, run the friction modified ****.
