i used one for about a year...
it was the most comfortable steering wheel i have ever used!
its shaped so ergonomically correct but its hard to explain it,
you just have to wrap your hands around one to understand

oh....and if you had the centerpad to boot? damn...perfection.

My first guess is for safety reasons, since these types of wheels don't have an airbag. I suppose it's better than nothing.
My second guess is that it doubles as a protective barrier for the finished metal. Perhaps to keep the metal from getting scuffed up from every day use.

only thing i don't like about the fg360 is the location of the horn buttons, i could never get used to it. over here in the philippines it is referred to as the "mickey mouse" wheel coz it looks like it has ears hehe
