I let my friend drive my car...
he's a novice at manual transmission. here's the story we were traveling on the freeway at about 80 mph. i told him to drop in in 4th and he misshifted and hit 2nd gear causing my rpm rising above 10k rpm. he was on 2nd for about3-5 seconds before i threw the gear in neutral for him. i knew i was in for trouble down the line because it did run fine for about 1 mile than the engine just died on us.
we pulled on the side of the freeway and tried restarting the car. it hesitated to start because i had to give it full throttle for the car to start and to keep it running i have to give it some throttle all the way. car sounds terrible w/ a lumpy sputtering sound.
the damage - i know i have bent valves because i read other post related to this.
a few questions for you guys.
1. what kind of damage am i into now?
2. would an acura dealership warrant this?
3. would i be able to do it myself w/ the helms manual?
4. what kind of cost can i run into?
5. i'm not gonna have to replace the whole motor. am i?
responses appreciated.

1) bent valves. completely your fault and his fault. you should next time warn him to be careful of shifting, and make sure hes comfortable shifting before giving him orders to downshift at 80. .... perhaps other problems as well.
2) no
3) no
4) more than a grand.
5) depends.

how easy is it to downshift to 2nd from 5th? i have a skunk2 ss and all you have to do is pull it back, you dont have to push it to the side, hows that hard at all?
Rule #1 for owning a Type R:
Friends don't let friends drive their R's.

Dude! You're gettin' a new engine!
(1) In "3-5 seconds" you mention (which seems like an eternity in terms of these sorts of things) you probably have piston damage, too. I wouldn't rule out other damage (wrist pin, rod, cylinder wall) either.
(2) Hell No!
(3) Probably not - have you done it before? I'm guessing not. And even then, there's a boatload of machining, even it is "just" valves.
(4) You wont know until you crack it open.
(5) Maybe... just maybe.

theres a few ways to do it. I fixed my bent valves, all 16 of them, for 200$.
If your valve seats / valve guides are intact, you can get away with not performing a valve job. You will just need probably 16 new valves, look on ebay you can sometime find some. Ive used ferrea, type r, and oem gsr... just get whatever is cheapest. I didnt see an advantage in any of them, besides ashetics. Other than that, you may need to dremel up the pistons to repair where your valves smacked em... depends on how bad it is though.
You may get away with this... just PRAY that none of the pistons are cracked, none of the valve guides are loose or cracked, or you need a valve job (expensive).
My $.02 for a guy who needs to do it cheap.

Valves for sure. Highly doubt any bottom end damage.
I'm betting on 8 exhaust valves. You're out a few hundred bucks for headwork.
Warren, who has seen 12k on the tach on stock parts... Oops.

im betting, in fact i know, u bent your valves, at least eight. anyway u may get lucky and Honda may fix it. Take it back yo your dealer and have tyhem "look" at it. Whatever you do, tell them nothing about what happened. Try and **** the dealer, cause im sure they did it to you. I got a new tranny from them......
ouch.. sorry to hear that...
i did the same.. bent a few valves... i noticed the sputtering and surging of power before my motor finally died..
its going to cost you more than a grand to fix, unless you do it yourself..
bring it to the dealer, it doesn hurt to try...
good luck..

Well I did something similar to my car (actually my friend did it) and all that was damaged was:
Clutch System (pressure plate, throwout bearing, synchros)
I got lucky with my car. The service manager told me that because my SYNCHROS went out that they would fix the car, he didn't question what happened--i just got really lucky. So... go to the dealership, don't tell them anything and see what they do. What else can you do?

Man, reading this post scares me.......I did the same thing, hopefully one of you guys reading can help me out.
Friday night i was drving down the freeway, and had to merge, i was going about 80 in 5th, i went to downshift to 4th, but i hit the gate and it went into 2nd. I let off the clutch for a split second, and gassed it to match rev's but i noticed my tach was climbing up high fasst, so i put my foot down on the clutch and dropped it in nuetral.
I pull off of the freeway, let my car idle, it idle's fine. Turned the car off, let it sit for about 15 min and turned it back on, and it turned on without problems and held idle. It drives fine, valves arent making any noises (other than crying for a valve adjustment) and the car holds idle just as good.
Did I get myself in deep Sh*t too, or am i safe???

Well all may not be lost. Since your in cali, i'd take it to metro acura and talk to Andy. He's been in a good mood as far as warranty lately. No guarantees but at worst you pay for half. Good luck homes.
