B16 Si tranny on an LS
I researched but to no avail so I thougt I'd drop the question here. fairly stock low miles LS motor with simple bolt ons. Header, Intake, 2.5" exhaust etc. I wanted a little more "pep" out of my motor but didn't want to invest in turbo or LS/Vtec. Would dropping in a 99' SI B16 tranny result in anything significant. I know the gearing is similar to an ITR tranny with the exception of 4th ( I think). Im sure everyone knows LS motors seem to plateau and are kinda blah just stock. I have other projects which is why I was thinking of just a tranny.
P.S. For those who know me I did have my car stolen and they are debating on giving the car back, I'm just doing some wishful thinking if I got it back.

IMHO not worth it. You will not really see anything that great. the motor still will only make 120+/- to the wheels...
get a bottle of nos, and call it a night.

Yeah I've heard both sides. One says no difference at all and other side says it's a nice lil investment for a big more without spending tons. Turbo and all that stuff isn't worth it to me right now. Living in LA generally I'm always stuck in traffic and second I'm finishing another vehicle... hopefully by spring!

yes you will see some gains. i've done this myself when my motor was stock.
a couple of friends of mine raced one had done a ls-vtec and the other a stock b18b1 with a si tranny and the si tranny one won. best bang for your buck, but sucks on the freeway.
its a good starting point

Why does it suck on the freeway? Would it make the rev that much more significant that it would just be screaming at over 60mph? If thats the case maybe I won't do it.. unless there was a way to adjust that issue somewhat. My other engine is a 1968 Ford 460... so much easier to work on. 365 HP stock and it sounds like a hot rod. vs my lil' LS motor.
Thanks for the input so far guys

if your worried about freeway driving the b16 tranny isnt for you.... with a b16 trans at 65mph you will be somewhere between 4500-5000rpm.... not good. also the gearing is designed for a high reving vtec engine which the ls isnt... the ls makes very little power in the higher rpms *above 6500 rpms so unless you were planning on doing a lsvtec and can deal with the high rpms on the highway and b16 trans wouldnt be a very good idea... its up to you... with the shorter gears, your ls may seem faster or to have more *pep but it wont really be much better than the original ls transmission

someone who has no experience with what youre asking..so steer away from his advice..Ive been through all three transmission on a B18B and two on a B18C...The SI tranny can do a lot for your car, a lot more than I/H/E combined on your normal bolt on setup...On the b18b I went from running 15.6's-15.8's to 15 flats with the SI transmission and with the GSR transmission I was running in around the 15.5-15.3 range...Id say 8 tenths in the quarter mile for 450 bucks was worth it

wow thats some really bad information..you clearly have never had the transmission on a b18b or driven one with it...b16 at 65 at 5000rpm?? yea??

I've been thinking about doing this too. LS stock motor/tranny has absolutely nothing at freeway speeds unless you're in 3rd revving the **** out of it. I feel like a b16 would give me a little more passing pep at freeway speeds. I've been thinking about just doing a full b16 swap from hmo though =/

Tranny, cams, and tuning. Well, those and CTR pistons. You will see a difference.

whoa this is way wrong. dont give out wrong information if your not sure what your saying. High reving or not, a b16 tranny on an ls is going to be quicker than just a ls tranny. thats obvious. i agree with the above post about 80-85 is 4500-4800rpms. my vtec cracks off at about 5500rpms going a little over 100 mph. i dont have a problem with freeway driving, to tell u the truth, the b16 tranny makes me drive slower on the freeway because i dont want to waste gas and im sure its saved me from a few tickets. and it sure is nice to be able to pull in 5th gear.

That would deem my car a project and i'm not sure if I wanna make my teg a project yet. If I were going to go to that trouble i'd just get rid of the non-vtec motor.

I cant imagine it'd be slower than the LS motor it has now...

I've been thinking about doing that to see how long it will last on a stock motor with 182k miles
Still stock clutch too, that'd have to go for sure haha.

this should be a no brainer, keep the LS and get it tuned with bolt-ons and a new tranny
